After the dark material of TBOBW, this episode was a nice quieter character building episode.

The relationship between Picard and his brother was believable, although the acting of the lad who played his nephew was a little weak.

Also, why if the Picard's are French, do they all speak with pristine English accents???

Meh, anyway.

A very charming episode.

One of my favorite episodes and considered to be the unofficial third part of the story which started with The Best of Both World's. A FIVE! Episode trivia from Memory Alpha:

Brent Spiner (Data) does not appear in this episode, the only one of the entire series in which he is absent.

"Family" is the first episode in which no scene is set on the Enterprise's bridge (except for stock footage seen in Shades of Gray). Other episodes of this sort include "Liaisons" and "Dark Page".

Robert and René would appear once more, though portrayed by different actors, in photographs seen in the Picard family album in Star Trek Generations following their tragic deaths in a house fire.

"Family" not only revealed personal information about the series regulars, but Chief O'Brien also gained a full name, Miles Edward O'Brien, as well as a more defined rank, Chief petty officer, though his rank insignia would continue to change throughout TNG. In his scene in "Family", O'Brien wore two irregularly-shaped pips

The bottle of Chateau Picard that Robert gives to the captain later reappeared in "Legacy" and "First Contact", as well as in the feature Star Trek Nemesis, albeit with a different label.

The song sung by Robert and Jean-Luc after their fight in the mud is Auprès de ma Blonde, an old and well-known French folk song.

Riker has his usual rank and rank insignia of Commander and position as Executive Officer (first officer) again at the start of this episode. While not mentioned directly on-screen, it seems that he renounced the commission of Captain that he was awarded in the previous episode in order to remain on the Enterprise.

Awards: This episode was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Cinematography for a Series (Marvin V. Rush).
