A damaged alien ship emerges from the wormhole. The vessels inhabitant agrees to permit his ship to be towed to DS9 to receive much needed repairs. O'Brien boards the ship and finds that the alien, Tosk, has the ability to cloak himself. Tosk is still uneasy about trusting the crew of DS9.

O'Brien befriends Tosk, but he will not share much information about the cause of the damage to his ship or his mission. Tosk is also unwilling to provide much information concerning his species, only that he does not need much sleep or food. O'Brien begins to suspect that Tosk is in danger, and informs Sisko of his suspicions.

Tosk is confined to the brig after he is found to be tampering with a junction box in an attempt to access the stations weapons locker. Shortly after, another alien ship emerges from the wormhole that matches the energy signal of Tosk's ship. The aliens beam aboard the station and attempt to take Tosk by force, but are stopped by the stations crew.

Sisko meets with the captain of the alien vessel and learns that they are hunters. The alien race breads Tosk for the purpose of hunting them for sport. The aliens demand that Sisko release Tosk to them to be returned home in disgrace. O'Brien arrives at the brig to escort the aliens back to their ship with Tosk. O'Brien has sabatoged one of the sensors to overload when the aliens pass through a doorway thus allowing him to aid Tosk in escaping the station and captivity.

O'Brien meets with Sisko to explain his actions and is reprimanded for disobeying orders. O'Brien justifies his actions by stating that the hunters were not happy about having to take Tosk home alive. It is also noted that he had expected to be stopped by a force field once he and Tosk had been located. The Captain informs him that the solution must have gotten by them.
