The Enterprise looks like fun to work on. Adventure. Excitement. But what if you work at a control panel all day and that's it? No windows. Stuffy atmosphere.

I'm sure there are many positions on the Enterprise that are filled with people grumbling about their job just like we all do at times.

Oh, I agree. It probably does get dull and monotonous, doing the same job everyday. We usually see the places where all the action is. But what if you don't work on the bridge or engineering or sickbay (I've noticed most scenes take place here) or you don't usually go on away missions. Even if you do work in those places, I'm sure it does bet boring watching a console all day... I'd be scared out of my life whenever the ship quaked. I wouldn't know what's going on, and the unkown is a lot scarier than the known. At least Picard and gang know what's going on when the ride gets bumpy... but some people... they just hear red alert. I'd just freak out.

The people I feel sorry for are the transporter people. They stand in the transporter room. And that's what they do. Maybe they do something else, but... what else is there for them to do? So they stand in the transporter room all day. There aren't even chairs in there! They have to stand! *sigh*

I keep thinking of Picard in Tapestry when he was the Lt. - the dreary man with the dreary job is how I think he described it.

Surely there are a lot of people on the Enterprise that don't have all the fun and excitement of the senior staff..

By the way, who cleans the Enterprise? :innocent:

As for the transporter room, I think they do regular maintnence and tests. There were many times where they showed O'Brien doing some kind of work in there. Sure, it's not the most exciting thing but I'm sure their shifts there don't last long. On the bright side, when you're off duty you can do pretty much whatever the hell you want on the holodeck.

Yeah, I think in star fleet the idea is that you have to put in a lot of hours and hard work before you get the really good positions.

In Chain of Command Captain Jerico had told Riker he wanted to change the shift rotations from being 3 a day to 4 so under Picard that would have meant 8 hour shifts

In DS9 Miles o'brien did hint at being bored on board the enterprise, saying on ds9 he had more to do. For on his former ship he took apart every system in the transporter room again and again, or did some such repetitive job. Anyone remember exactly what he did say?

he had his head under a console and was talking to kira or bashir, can't remember the episode name.

That would have made for an interesting ep..Data discussing cleaning ideas with the janitor :andorian:

That would have been great. Or a reference to the "sanitation engineer" being killed during an attack and having to find a replacement.

I think many people just see these jobs as a means to an end.. They want promotion, and I assume everyone has to go the hard way..

I think that it helps that money is no longer an issue for the people. Therefore they are able to do what they enjoy, not forced to do what will make them the most money.

People join Starfleet for all sorts of reasons. Some join just for the scientific research opportunities--junior science officers probably aren't thrilled when the Romulans or the Borg or whoever attack, but being able to observe stellar phenomena up close? That's gotta be exciting for a scientist.

I definitely agree. That would have to be a real rush for a scientist, and well worth the risk when the ship is attacked.

I wholeheartedly agree! I am studying to become a research scientist(working in either physics, biology, or chemistry...especially physics and astronomy)...as well as an astronaut( I wish to become a mission specialist). So I think it would be a rush to get to see stellar phenomenon up close. Just as I have felt a rush when a water spout formed near by the road my family was traveling on(when I was 16)...or when A hurrican or tropical storm comes near the Florida coast(My family and I tend to go to a section of the sea wall...when a storm comes in, before the evacuations-if any, amnd watch the storm come in and have the waves crash over the sea wall....it is such a rush. The combination of the waves, the sea foam, the wind, and the fact that more often than not we can see the Weather channel team filming on the shoreline, which is when we know that the storm could be getting bad....that is so wild!)

There was a cleaner on The Wrath of Khan. Cleaner on the Enterprise: ha! Imagine some old lady with a fag hanging out of her mouth hoovering about Captain Picard. "Lift yer feet there Jean Luc. I'll only be a minute!" Or polishing the wooden rail around Worf. In Voyager we saw a crewman cleaning the transporter pads as punishment. Maybe they could beam dirt off the ship. I dont know really. It's like going to the toilet. We dont really need to know. But there's a thought. What if you were on the loo when the Borg attacked? Do they have public toilets or do you have to go back to your quarters? If you were constipated could you have your faeces beamed out of your intestines? Do they all poo in the same way? What does Klingon poo look like? Vulcan poo?

Everyone in Starfleet has to earn thier strips just like you have to in your job so to have the unwanted job is just a way to means of getting a promotion.

Just think of the Voyager Episode "Good Shepard". That episode focuses on 3 members of the Voyager crew with tedious jobs. Especially Crewman Mortimer Harren, working on Deck 15 in power distrubution.

well, thats a good point, lol. but these people don't even get paid (and I;m not saying it's all about the money- hear me out  ) What about the people who have long, boring jobs with no breaks until night time, and they don't get time out for the holodeck, and they can't, you know, go on holiday or buy themselves something interesting. If you have a boring job on a star ship, it must be a horribly dreary life style.

I really liked Lower Decks and the way they tied things together with the Bajoran Ensign, I forget her name but she was cute :dude: .

I didn't care for the ending but it showed the realities of military service, sometimes you are called upon to give your life.

I would have liked to have seen more stories focused on so called Lower Deck Crewmembers.. The Senior Officers have great jobs and it is an exciting adventure for them. But what about that Ensign in the Armory or that Transporter Technician? There must have been many scanners and consoles that needed constant montoring. One time I seem to remember Picard calling to Turbo lift control when Q stopped everything. What's it like to be in control of the Turbolifts? Are they happy with what they do? Kinda like a day in the life of an Ensign. I wonder if it's a long boring shift then sleep and then back to it again.

In the episode “Up The Long Ladder” Riker tells Brenna that she does not need to clean as the Enterprise is self cleaning. According to ship blue prints there is only one public toilet on the Enterprise.

Maybe you can upload a visual image from the sensors to your console to see what's going on.

Anyway, like every crewman has a window in his qharters, so they will see space at some point during the day.

I thought there was two, and the original Enterprise 1701 didnt have any at all :)

I would imagine that hardly nobody does the same job every shift. As many are trained in different areas they might have turbolift control one shift, then the next is in the transporter room and so on..
