  1. The new movie looks and sounds promising.

The enormous budget is the biggest problem. It will have to be the most successful Trek movie of all time just to break even.

But Paramount deserve credit for taking the franchise into a new direction.

After the mundane Voyager, the disaster of Enterprise and the colossal failure of Nemesis, something needed to be done. They couldn't just make another movie/TV show on Berman-auto pilot.

Financially it may not be a success, but creatively, at least something different is being attempted.

  2. The United States Of Africa has never been confirmed on-screen. It comes from the TOS writers bible. It's de facto canonical since it's been used in the Chronology and even on StarTrek.COM. So one may as well accept it unless it's altered canonically. According to Memory Alpha, in "Star Trek Phase II's" writers bible, she was supposed to have been born in the "African Confederacy". Interestingly Geordi La Forge was born (non-canonically, since the reference was cut from a TNG episode) in the "African Confederation"

I suppose one could reasonably suggest that the US of Africa, the African Confederacy, and the African Confederation are all the same entity, in the same sense that the EEC, EC, EU has changed its name over time.

  3. Star Trek fans have got to get used to this idea that stories end.

DS9's story was completed. It was a great show, but it finished on a high.

Therefore there is no need to run it into the ground unnecessarily.

For those who want more, there are novels to read.

Insurrection was the time for a DS9 movie, but that opportunity was missed, and now it's too late.

DS9 is done, and rightly so.

  4. Don't you hate it when people are nice to you and act like your friend but then get into a chat room that talk about you behind your back and think that because you aren't there you won't hear from other people what was said?

No, not really. It makes no sense to waste time and energy "hating" anybody. Particularly those on internet chat rooms. If someone is nice to me, that's great. If they then started talking behind my back, then really who cares?

  5. Scottish screen hunk Ewan McGregor is frightened by Star Wars fans and their devoted fervor for the sci-fi saga. The 34-year-old actor, who plays the young Obi-Wan Kenobi, found working on the three prequel Star Wars movies uninspiring as they focused more on special effects than performance - but he is even less enthusiastic about the films' die hard enthusiasts. He says, "There's this huge following, which is weird. They have big meets and conventions, and I find it all a bit frightening. Once this guy met me at a stage door when I was doing a play in London. The guy yelled, 'Obi-Wan. Do you have any advice for a trainee Jedi?' I just said, 'No, don't be so ridiculous.' It's just so weird, it really is."

    from IMDB.com

If anything I think he's taking the fan comments far too seriously. If someone refers to him as "Obi-Wan" then he should realise that they are being lighthearted and probably do not want serious advice for Jedi. Re: the conventions, I'm not sure why sci-fi/fantasy fans attending a convention would be any more frightening than say tens of thousands of fans cramming into Murrayfield to watch men kicking a ball around, and why exactly would a "huge following" be "weird?"

  6. A local resident informed the Voice of Christian Youth America on Friday. The Milwaukee-based radio network responded by interrupting its morning programming for a special broadcast that aired on nine radio stations throughout Wisconsin. The broadcast criticized the dress-up day and accused the district of promoting alternative lifestyles.

"We believe it's the wrong message to send to elementary students," said Jim Schneider, the network's program director. "Our station is one that promotes traditional family values. It concerns us when a school district strikes at the heart and core of the Biblical values. To promote this to elementary-school students is a great error."

Schneider co-hosts "Crosstalk," a nationally syndicated call-in Christian radio show.

Who says a school has to abide by Biblical values?

    Very interesting.

Surreal, with a slight touch of Expressionism.

  8. like you brits never cease to amaze me. blowing prince harry's cover...clever. j/k, it's not directed at you personally cara. so im sorry in advance.

The story about Prince Harry in Afghanistan was blown by Matt Drudge, an American website operator.

The British press maintained a 100% blackout on the story.

The Drudge Report article you make reference to was published on Feb. 28. The Australian magazine New Idea published Prince Harry's military status on Jan. 7, well over a month before the Drudge Report.

Yes, but the Australian story passed without much notice.

It was the Drudge Report which gained the most attention. They picked up the story and posted it online.

  9. 1- What does the text mean by "militia?"

i believe the next best thing is the united states national guard

If that's true, then it could be that the framers intended for the people of the United States to keep and bear arms only if they were a part of an organised National Guard. I think it's all besides the point anyway. Americans will never give up their weapons and I think it's unlikely they'd be willing to join the National Guard in order to keep them.

  10. "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

It's the words "well regulated militia" that needs to be looked at.

My interpretation is that the right of Americans to keep and bear arms comes with the proviso of being part of an organised militia.

The main areas of debate IMO fall into the following catagories.

1- What does the text mean by "militia?"

2- What dodes the text mean by "well-regulated?"

3- What did those terms mean when the amendment was written?

4- What do those terms mean today?

5- Which definition will the Supreme Court side with?

  11. My advice is to ignore the episode entirely because it's one of TNG's worst.

I'm surprised Deanna Troi survived as a character for seven seasons.

LOL - Whattaya mean by that?

I meant that 1- the episode is poor and 2- Deanna Troi is one of the worst Star Trek characters in the history of the franchise and should have been cut at the same time the equally rubbish Tasha Yar departed.
