Walter Leland Cronkite, Jr. (November 4, 1916 - July 17, 2009) was a American broadcast journalist, best known as anchorman for the CBS Evening News for 19 years (1962–81). During the heyday of CBS News in the 1970s and 1980s, he was often cited in viewer opinion polls as "the most trusted man in America" because of his professional experience and kindly demeanor. Cronkite died on July 17, 2009 at the age of 92 after an extended battle with cerebrovascular disease.

A great man who helped set what TV news should be...

  3. Pic Shows Man Robbing Stores With Klingon Sword

    Clerks Recognize Sword As 'Bat'leth'

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- A surveillance picture released by police Wednesday afternoon shows a man armed with what appears to be a small Klingon sword, holding up a 7-Eleven convenience store.

That same man robbed another 7-Eleven store store a half-hour later, and remains at large, Colorado Springs police Lt. David Whitlock said.

The first robbery was reported at 1:50 a.m., at 145 N Spruce St. The clerk told police a white man in his 20s, wearing a black mask, black jacket, and blue jeans, entered the store with a weapon the clerk recognized from the Star Trek TV series.

The robber demanded money and left with an undisclosed amount.

A half hour later, police received a call from a 7-Eleven at 2407 N. Union Blvd., where a man matching the previous description entered the store with a similar weapon. He also demanded money from the store clerk. The clerk refused and the robber "transported" himself out of the store on foot.

Both clerks described the weapon as a Star Trek Klingon-type sword, called a "bat'leth."

Neither clerk was injured in the robberies.

The Startrek.com Web site describes the Klingon weapon as crescent-shaped and about a yard long. However, the weapon that the man was wielding appears to be smaller than that. The bat'leth has points on both ends, two points in between and a handle on the outside.

Police said they don't know if the sword used by the robber was made of metal.

Klingons were warlike enemies of the good-guy United Federation of Planets in the original "Star Trek" series but were allies in "Star Trek: The Next Generation."

  4. I've been hearing that there is a move to build a new set of Twin Towers instead of the Freedom Tower. Perosnally I would like them to rebuild the Twin Towers, and as one person put it, "And make them a story higher." The counter argument for the Freedom Tower is that there has already been so money spent that they should just build it...

I would like to ask why aren't they building? It's been seven year... They should do something. Don't leave a whole in a ground... They need to do something.

  5. Just got back from work and here is some video from a fe days ago...

  6. I have to go to work today. I left a few things undone and I have to fix them ASAP! The storm should be here in three hours or less. I just hope I don't get snowed in at work. I won't be able to get to STF through the work internet blocker. I'll get back as soon as possible.

I am packed for bad weather, I have double layers on, and I have anything else I could think of stuffed in my backpack just in case. I should be at work around 1330 PST. If I don't leave by 1800 PST I'm stuck there for the night with how the weather is looking. See ya guys later.

    Edit-----

I am at work. The snow started around 1330 and it is now 1600. I am almost done. Here is the current radar. I am just a liitle to the left of the S in Seattle.

  7. First...

    Video of snow from work.

Also, we got near 4 inches here. Other places got near 10+ inches. The next storm is said to bring 4 to 26 inches in the area I live in (with in five miles of where I live). The last storm was forecasted to only bring in at most 3 inches... I am really not looking forward to Sunday.

And to MrP, El Nino happens every few years and this year is a neutral year.

  8. The cold snap many of us are going through is just starting, and that isn't the bad news. NOAA (aka National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), the people that run the National Weather Service and The Weather Channel in the USA, have said that the arctic air moving into the nation is messing us their computer models. The current models in use normally don't have to deal with arctic air for more then a few days, but long-range models are showing that we could see this air mass park itself over the lower 48 for weeks!!!

What does this mean? The coldest temperatures in the Seattle area in 20 to 50 years are going to happen between now and Christmas. Night lows getting down to near single digits. The normal night low in the area for this time of year is 36F. Wind chill could get to -10F in some areas. Many other western states are also going 10 to 30 degrees below normal. And let us not forget that just a few days ago there was snow in New Orleans.

Now we have heard of climate change, but the reason I think this happening is due to the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). The PDO has been correlated to the winters in the Pacific Northwest. What this means is that 90% of the time if the PDO is positive then a warmer winter happen... If it is negative then there will be a cold winter. There is no research yet to prove what effect there might be on all of North America. Currently it is looking like we are entering a negative phase in the PDO.

Of course there could be many other reasons why this cold snap i happening. Many of those reasons might not be scientifical, but maybe valid in some peoples minds.

    Now the maps!
