  1. Redshirt: Not everyone's way of forming emotional attachments is the same. Just because you see it as trivial does not make it true for others or make their attachments any less important. To each his own.

    Hi Ace,

I agree that each person has their own set of values and will place different levels of importance on this board. For me, it's quite trivial. Perhaps this is not so for others.

I'm just saying that it's very sad that people would compare this to real family/friends. A message board will never compare. Not now, not ever. It cheapens the meaning of words like family and friendship to use them in reference to people who may or not even be showing their true self here. Just as everyone has the privilege to decide how much faith to place in someone they know only on screen, I have the privilege of expressing disappointment that people are not willing to hold their true family and friends in higher esteem than a message board.

    RSV

  2. I don't see it. Not at all. It's just a message board. Then again, how connected you are here all depends on how good or bad your real life is and how connected you are to the people in it. No message board will every compare to that and I think it's sad that people get so attached to something so trivial.

  3. Shot taken, corrected it. :dude:  :dude:

Oh, actually, I was talking about the effect of alcohol on my own spelling and relieved there was a spell-checker to make sure I don't make any horrendous errors. I'm drinking blue Pepsi and, err, something else at the moment. It looks very Trekky. I can't imagine that Romulan ale is very nice.

  4. Fray? What fray? This is no fray. We are just discussing some things that are sliding on and off topic. It's kind of interesting, don't you think? Yes, I agree with you RSV, I wish also they'd go into more detail about how problems were solved. I particulaly like Picard's observation that "things are impossible until they aren't." and " Make it so." Great words to live by. Now can we slide on back to Phlox? :dude:

Yes, another shot. Make it so. Glad there's a spell-checker.

  5. It was Trip and Phlox's wife Feazil.

    WHO IS FEAZIL? :dude:

Please read the line you quoted. Feazil is Phlox's wife....one of them.

    :dude: Yeah, really.

OK, I've had a couple and I'm just about ready to join the fray. Alas, my comments will undoubtedly come across as rather bland compared to the rest of the mud-slinging in this thread. Such as they are...

I agree in part with TUH's comment that ST likes to make sweeping statements. They do this to illustrate a point. Usually the point is that there are other cultural values, beliefs and mores that may differ from our own. We are supposed to keep an open mind to them. Unfortunately, they rarely get into enough detail and the point often comes across as rather self-serving and condescending to some people. In general, I'm quite open-minded and agree with most of the values expressed by the program, but I can certainly see how some people would think so.

Picard once said that humanity evolved beyond poverty, yet we never hear how this was achieved. How nice that it happened without effort! I'd appreciate it if they'd go into detail on some of this stuff sometimes and explore the thornier issues.

Sorry, lost my train of thought there. Somebody pick up on it if you like.

  6. Unless copyright laws change they wouldn't be having a movie night anyway - private home viewings only. :flex:

I have to take exception with the old b&w being boring.  Some of them actually had plots....contemporary action movies with non stop special effects (and no plot) bore me to tears.  Maybe they choose these movies in an attempt to portray the crew as culturally educated.

In defense of Trip it sounds like he's trying to choose movies that would meet the needs of the crew not just picking movies he likes.  (a Hope and Crosby show for morale) That is what a person in leadership is supposed to do.

Does anyone remember "The Greatest Show on Earth" about the circus where they pan the audience and there are Hope and Crosby eating popcorn.

You know, I need to see Son of Paleface - I haven't had a good laugh in a while.

I agree. People watch movies in part to get something that's lacking in their own lives or to experience things they can't through film. Why would the crew be interested in an action/Sci-Fi movie when they're living it every day? They'd much more likely want to be reminded of the peacefulness of home, which is exactly what happens in some of the movies that have been shown.

    *Sigh*

Exactly the point I made in the second post in this thread, RSV.

Heh heh. Whoops! I remember reading that when it was originally posted but I held off on my own reply for a while. I won't be fooled by your brainwashing techniques again. :)

I'd like to see them using the movie as a kind of reflection of what's going on in the main story. They were watching a romantic movie in "Doctor's Orders" about a relationship that couldn't work out; similarly, Phlox was going through a similar experience with Cutler. It was a nice little touch.

  8. And Red Shirt Volunteer ur right in saying only one person can changed the situation.......but is it not worth even a chance to try and give some words of comfot

Usually I'd say yes, but too many words of comfort can lead people to be comfortable with a bad situation. There's a time to make people feel better and time to make them stand up and take action. Tina's smart. I'm sure she'll find a way to cope and move on.

Besides, there have already been a tonne of messages expressing sympathy. One more won't make much difference. I think it's better for people to hear another point of view and piece of advice than a string of comments just agreeing with each other.

I see your point, but let's have a little faith in Tina's ability to turn things around. I'd say the same things to a friend if they were in the same situation.

  9. I have to say that I like them all. Although there have been a few very weak episodes, particulary in the second season, the characters have evolved very well and complement each other nicely now. I'm just working my way through the first season again and it's quite impressive to see how naturally they've developed. The only ones I'm disappointed in are Hoshi and Mayweather. They got little time in the early days and some fans were calling for more time on screen. Well, if you compare the first season to third, they've got even less time now from what I can gather. Hopefully the writers/producers will address this next season.

  10. Get over it and move on. Moping won't help and neither will asking advice from cyber "friends" who know little or nothing about your real life in detail. There's only one person who can help you and I think you know who that is. Dwelling too much on the past will not be helpful if it begins to prevent a positive future. It's only useful insofar as it helps avoid making the same mistake(s) again.

    Good luck.

  11. What's exhaustive about a list of 5 founding planets/species? I think there's something to the omission of Alpha Centauri.

Maybe they just couldn't spell it right and, to avoid embarrassment, the writers decided not to put it in the script.

  12. Most of you seem over-concerned with what's "right" or "wrong." For me, what comes next is more important. If I think admitting I'm "wrong" even when I know I'm not can avoid a future problem, I'll do it. If I'm wrong and know it but can't be bothered dealing with a person who I've had a lot of disagreements with and I think refusing to admit I'm wrong will irritate them and possibly reduce how much I even have to talk to them because they're so frustrated with me, I'll do that, too. Right and wrong is so often a matter of perspective and interpretation that it rarely matters in maintaining a great number of relationships. The important thing is that others perceive you as being sincere in what you say regardless of whether you're correct or not.

In the end you have to decide if you'd rather be right or get along well with people to some degree at some times.

  13. Well according to some Documentaries Hitler and a few high ranking SS members had a thing for Demons and the occult. That could explain why, if it is indeed Reman, the Romulans sent someone who would not exactly blend in.

Future Guy may have used this idea as a way to provide a natural point of insertion in which some alien from the future could blend into Earth's past without looking too out of place. Obviously the Reman, if it is in fact a Reman, wouldn't blend in on the street, but it might fit in with a regime dabbling in the occult.

  14. Or maybe he was just having a bad hair day - wings? Or maybe he was wearing fake ears to make the Suliban and everyone else think he was Romulan/Vulcan? Who knows?

I just rewatched "Broken Bow" myself the other day and another interesting thing I noticed was that Archer, as a boy, sees T'Pol on the beach either in person or as a hallucination. What was that about?

  15. Are you looking for dating, long term dating or if it works the possibility of marriage.  If you keep dating you'll find out if the difference in age brings up any issues.  Do you like to do the same things, have the same energy level and enjoy the same friends?

After all the wonderful comments made I'll probably come across like T'Pol but I recommend giving some thought to the long term potential.  She's young enough to possibly want children - that would mean for you possibly having kids in college when you're seventy.

You will also be retirement age before she is - so she'll either need to retire early and get less money or you'll have to wait for those Winnebago trips.

And statistically she'll be more likely to spend a longer time alone in her old age.

Those are not reasons to not have a relationship but they do represent some of the possible consequences of the age difference that you should at least think about.

There are no guarantees so you don't want to be so practical you miss out on a good deal.

TUH takes wet blanket and leaves :)

Well, I completely agree with TUH. Go for it if you want, but be prepared for problems due to the age difference later. If you the older partner in a couple with a significant age difference lives long enough, they are sure to face health problems in old age that will result in the younger partner having to take care of them. Children are also a major issue that she may or may not be thinking about at the moment. Careers are also possibly an issue that could take a couple in opposite directions one partner may need to be more mobile while an older partner may not be able to move so easily. Life experience is also important - I wouldn't want to have to go through a lot of things I'd already done again just because my partner's younger and hasn't experienced them yet and the difference could also mean a difference in interests (though not necessarily).

On the other hand, nobody can see the future and the only way to find out is to try; however, I'd say the probability is not good (at least for me with someone who is a lot younger/older). It's easy when we're young, but I'd say a whole lot harder when we get older.

    Good luck.

  16. Red Shirt: "Hey, what the...!? You're not on the crew manifest."

Reptilian: "Why would you ever walk behind a big boulder like this on your own?"

Red Shirt: "Saw this move in a training video. Say, where'd you get that funky uniform? I love the way the green catches your eyes."

Reptilian: "Same place I got this huge rifle." Zap.

  17. First off, I think all the criticism and negativity about the characters is a credit to the actors who brought them to us. Whether we like them of not, at least they've given us something to talk about.

If T'Pol made the decision to use trellium-D of her own free will based on hearing that it might cause some interesting emotions, I would blame her. However, she was initially exposed in the course of her work and subsequently became addicted. First she was exposed on the Vulcan ship, at which time we discovered she, and all Vulcans, would have a strong reaction to it. She was then exposed again as Trip tried to use it to protect the ship, right? In effect, her addiction can be clearly connected to her duty on the ship. We wouldn't likely blame someone who got addicted to a substance if they were forced to experience its effects as part of their job; rather, we would likely see that person taking their company to court if they were not supported and also likely winning a large payment in my opinion. I don't agree at all with her decision to play with trellium-D, but I don't think we can completely blame her. I think Blalock did a good job this season in developing a character that showed both sides of this issue.

Bakula also added another dimension to Archer. I felt he was naive and one-dimensional at the beginning of the series, but has evolved into a more realistic portrayal of a leader. The situation he faced with the Xindi arc put him in circumstances often beyond his control that affected his decisions. He did get angry more frequently this season, but I think as a result of stress, not bad character. He gives his staff the freedom to make their own decisions, but this is also a responsibility they must fulfil. When they fail to, he lets them have it. I do this in my own job. You have to let people do their jobs to get the most out of them, but as the leader you also have to demand minimum standards be met and not pamper people when they fail to achieve them. I think we'll see Archer return to the way he once was to a degree (though I don't think he can ever fully go back, as TUH said) as the crew gets a little more leeway and a little less pressure in future missions.

  18. That's an interesting question, Spacetigger. I doubt it would last that long as is without serious restoration with tech we don't yet have, but it would certainly be worth restoring in the future as it's probably the first image that comes to mind for most people when they think of San Francisco.

  19. What is with all the drama at this site?  I thought it was supposed to be about Trek.

It is about Trek. We are just a big bunch or Trekies who sometimes have a bit of difficulty. Then we all make-up. Your just coming in at the end, this is make-up stuff, that's all. It's good. :eekout: In order to be a well rounded person one must be able to function in many capacities, " Red Shirt ", variety IS the spice of life, right? Do you just watch ONE channel of the Television?

Umm, actually, yes... I do watch one channel of television. As a matter of fact, I only watch one program: "Enterprise." To be completely honest, I don't watch any channel because I have to have "Enterprise" sent to me on video since it isn't really available where I live (it started 2 seasons late and is on at 3a.m. on a Wednesday morning).

TV is most certainly not the spice of life - it's the sugar. It's the junk that acts as a substitute for a lack of substance in reality or ability to deal with said reality. I hope you accept my assurance that I am able to function in a great many capacities, but being able to flick through the channels is not one of them.

Just so there's no more drama, rest assured that I am calm and don't need to "lighten up." I think NordicBearskin has a very good point. Not only is it relevant in relation to pointless responses, but also the fact that many of the responses utterly fail to address subsequent ones. Too many threads are a string of posts by different people giving the same answer to the original post and never really developing into a discussion. I'm not saying that's what happened here, because it obviously didn't, but it does occur with disturbing frequency.

One example is when there's a poll and people vote then decide to make a post that includes little or nothing more than the option they chose. What's the point of writing that? They should at least give their reason so that meaningful discussion might follow it. That's all I have to say at the moment.

  20. Sorry Red Shirt Volunteer,

I didn't mean to be a Berman basher.  I was just trying to make a light hearted response.

I still think being called 'delightful' by Rick Berman is a great compliment' :eekout:

    Hi Trineergirl,

No need to apologise because I didn't think you were bashing. I know you're a fan of the show. I just thought a few people might jump on those words and start bashing, as happens on occasion. Maybe I jumped the gun myself.

    Cheers,
