  1. Tonight I saw the ad for the upcoming episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and it features a murder at a science fiction convention. The costumes for the show the con is about looks very very much like a Star Trek con ala Galaxy Quest. The episode's title? A Space Oddity

Do you think this could have anything to do with CBS buying some of the rights to Star Trek from Paramount and the new movie opening in a few weeks.

Here is a link to the Episode preview

  2. I'm a big fan of the original and count it among my fave films. I'm also a big fan of the remake with Keanu Reeves. Contrary to the narrow mindedness of some that have nothing better to do than trash something, I actually enjoyed it very much and was pleased to see our generation pay homage to a classic sci fi film by portraying it in a more contemporary setting allowing for a new audience to find this film. :roflmao:

Before you call people narrow minded you need to learn that people may have an opinion that differs from yours and that does not make it any less valid. There are many science fiction fans that are tired of seeing constant remakes of classics just to make money with CGI.

These remakes are not a "homage" to the originals but a way to make money while not creating anything new, CGI does not a movie make. CGI extravaganzas may impress the younger fans that have grown up with special effects being around most of their lives but I want story to go with them and preferably something new not a rehash of a classic. Before you accuse me of "trashing" CGI I am very impressed with what they do with CGI but what they are doing isn't improving anything if they keep remaking the same movie over and over.

They have remade The Last Man On Earth Twice as The Omega Man and last time as I am Legend other than higher budgets and updating the time frame they didn't really improve on the story or make it more watchable.

The Thing From Another World was remade as The Thing by John Carpenter, it did follow the book much closer than the original and they are very different movies. I still prefer the original but like the remake. Now the remake is being remade to take advantage of CGI.

They have been trying to remake Forbidden Planet for several years now and the deal keeps falling apart (GOOD) and I can't see how they can improve on the original. Other than the blaster bolts the special effects were first rate.

  3. Alexander Courage gets my vote, he was the composer of the original Star Trek series theme among others such as Lost In Space and Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea. He also collaborated with John Williams when Williams was with The Boston Pops.

A side note on Alexander Courage, the reason he didn't do any more work on Star Trek was because Gene Roddenberry bilked him out of half of his royalty money by adding a quickly penned set of garbage lyrics to the sheet music for the theme when it was submitted for copyright.

  4. I would be very arrogant and close-minded of us to think that we are the only intelligent life in the universe. Whether they are more advanced and have visited Earth or not is a matter of contention. If we are the most advanced life form in the universe the universe is in a lot of trouble (see Van Roy). If there are more advanced beings and they have visited the Earth their opinion of humans can't be too good as we are the only species on the planet that preys upon itself.

Personally I believe that they have visited this rock in space and wonder about whether we will survive ourselves.

  5. I say bring them back, but instead of the banners taking you to the STF front page they could point to a blog or a user profile or something.

:screwloose: yes this way Roy can get some girls to find him!

Or better yet it in Van Roy's case it could direct them on where to hide from him :congrats:

  6. The direction this thread turned reminds me of a movie, American Wedding. The wedding cake and trimming of the pubic area.

Back to the original topic, as near as I can figure out women go to the public bathroom for 3 reasons.

    1) To talk about us guys.

    2) To trash the other women around (like in a restaurant)

    3) To encourage each other, if one of them has a case of "public toilet nerves" the other one can encourage her like a football coach in the locker room at half-time.

  7. I am waiting for one of the ambulance chasers to have a TV commercial that if you ate beans or broccoli for dinner and suffered from flatulence afterward that you may be entitled to large sums of money for social embarrassment. Can you see someone suing for flatulence? I can, they sue for everything else.

  8. Since the crew on Buck Rogers will all be paid professionals, they will be working full time on this show and work will supposedly continue on the "amateur" production of Phase 2 on a part time basis. I personally think Phase 2 will be phased out. (bad joke intended) Cawley got into Star Trek 11 and the success of Phase 2 has led him to a paying gig with Buck Rogers.

I see one problem with the new Buck Rogers, how will they ever top the women running around in the skin tight and or skimpy outfits they did in the 1979 TV series.

  9. The hunter in this case lied about something, the shots were not as well placed as he claims. He shows that he is inexperienced, quoted from the article " Goodman said the deer looked dead to him, but seconds later the nine-point, 240-pound animal came to life" an experienced hunter does not immediately approach an animal that he or she has shot for just this reason.

  10. I believe to qualify as a "Van Roy Moment" there has to be sex or attempted sex involved. Nakedness alone doesn't count.

Nudity with a dose of stupidity does qualify as a Van Roy Moment. A Van Roy Moment does not have to contain sex or attempted sexual contact, though when sex is part if it attempted seems to be the more realistic choice.

  11. If you read the book Inside Star Trek : The Real Story by Herbert Solow and Robert Justman there is a revelation about those lyrics. According to Solow and Justman, Gene Roddenberry wrote the lyrics and added them without Alexander Courages knowledge or consent after Courage turned the music in to him to be copyrighted. This allowed Roddenberry to claim 50% of the royalties as co-author. Courage in interviews told that same story.

  12. I started shooting handguns, rifles and shotguns when I was 7 years old. As a child it was always under proper adult supervision. I was taught by my step-father who was an ex Airborne ranger and Baltimore County police officer and by his friend a police firearms instructor and gunsmith. They would NEVER have let me shoot something like an Uzi, that is beyond irresponsible, it is criminal. The parents of the child and the people running that demo should be prosecuted if the laws in Massachusetts allow it. It is irresponsible idiots like them that cause law abiding gun owners to have such a bad reputation. I have never used a gun for amusement but as a tool for hunting, self protection and target shooting as they were designed to be used. A fully automatic weapon is not designed to be used by a child.
