  1. I was asleep in bed at 7:00 am our time. My hubby rang me up from work and told me to turn the TV on. It must have happened 5 hours earlier. I was absolutely gobsmacked when I saw what had happened. The worst part for me was when it showed people jumping to their deaths.

  2. (I'm trying to say a bad word but can't).jpg

(I'm trying to say a bad word but can't) - the obvious name for potato crisps/chips. It's amazing that somebody didn't think of it sooner. Cheesey Pricks would be especially appetising. Ever since I first met Sergio, I was aware that the average Brazilian knows little about English slang. But to overlook one of our most obvious, enduring and widely-used derogatory euphamisms for the male organ is surely a mistake of such magnitude that it deserves pity rather than mockery. Still, I'm going to mock all the same.

I notice also, with some additional mirth, that these pricks do not use preservatives. Given my own knowledge of Brazillian slang, that's one joke that won't be lost on them.

  3. I voted for ' Deep Impact '

Armageddon, which may I say I enjoyed, was your run of the mill Hollywood feel good movie, laden with special effects and heroes. Deep Impact on the other hand really got to grips with the human side of it all, fears, feelings, sacrifice and family. Deep Impact has two meanings in this respect, the first is the obvious one and the other is the deep impact it has on peoples lives.

They were both enjoyable films but in different ways

  4. I looked recently online for Star Trek computer themes and found one that was perfect. It sounds just like LCARS, and the on screen fonts look like the TNG moniters. So I was wondering if there was anyone else who had there computer costumized with Star Trek stuff.

Do you mean the System 47 screen saver ? You will find that one page back. ;)

  5. I love Casablanca!!  Amazing movie.

My all-time favourite Christmas movie is the Alastair Sims' version of A Christmas Carol although I haven't watched the version Patrick Stewart did yet so that could change.

Baa Humbug !! Believe me it doesn't even come close to the Alistair Sims version.

  6. Lollypop, don't be tempted.  It takes a long time to research which scope will suit you.  Camera shops are not really the best place to buy one.  You need to be sure that you can trust they sell good quality scopes with a guarantee that you can go to them for help or service.

meade.com  has a questionaire that you can try to see what size and type of scope may be suitable for you and your situation. There are other brands like Celestron, Televue ......

There is a invaluable book called  'Starware' by Phillip Harrington which also has a questionaire and all sorts of wonderful advice and cautions when purchasing.  Borrow it from your library or state library as it is quite expensive to buy ( A$90 in 1999) before you buy anything!

There are many factors to think about:

    level of interest

    budget

    type of mount

sturdiness of mount (this is where most scopes fall down- as the mount is unsturdy and vibrates rendering the scope useless!)quality of optics

viewing only or astrophotography as well

    portability

viewing planets mostly/deep sky objects or both

    computer control or not

    dobsonian/schmidt cassegrain/schmidt newtonian/refractor........

I wouldn't buy one just for the Mars opposition as you will regret it.  It took me three years of steady research, talking to other amateurs and taking opportunities to look through different types of scopes and sizes of scopes to finally decide.

For the opposition as I said, if you don't have a scope find a local person with a scope or local group, look through theirs and then talk to them about their scopes if you are still serious about buying one.

Email me if you are still unsure if want to ask questions because it is bamboozlling.  I've been there and done that! ;)

Goodness I never thought it would be this complicated.

The last time I looked through a telescope it was my brothers. And I saw the rings of Saturn, and the moons of Jupiter. And his telescope is used mainly for bird watching.

  7. Ah, I don't believe humans can evolve into energy.  When we die, we go to Heaven or Hell, well, according to my believes anyway. :look: If the movie had more of a fantasy-type story, I could accept that he "evolved" kind'a like Kes did in VOY "The Gift", but due to the movie's realism, it just look like he exploded into nothing.

But it was a Sci-Fi film. Another thing he hadn't just been in the world for a week. His parents had to keep him locked in the dark for his own safety, and the safety of others. Because he attracted lightning

  8. We only use 10% of our brain. Who knows what we are capable of doing if we knew how to tap into the rest. One day maybe !!  :look:

    Do you mean Powder ?
