  1. Has anyone here read "Spock's World?" I know it's not canon, but Kirk and McCoy (especially McCoy) really burst the whole planet's bubble on this very issue.

I've heard people (not here) speak of how McCoy is racist and unaccepting of Spock, and that's why they think Star Trek isn't as progressive as people say. I don't believe that. McCoy has problems with Spock, sure, but he still works with him and respects him. It's the same the other way around. Spock brings up human "inadequacies" more than once. (I don't see emotions as immaturity, necessarily. How we express them is another matter.) But the men truly end up as friends, even while not fully understanding their differences. I think part of the real lesson is that BOTH sides need to work on their opinions and attitudes - more "mature" or not. No side is right all of the time.

I also think part of the question is - Spock fights his human side for most of his TOS life before accepting it. Really, his "humanness" is part of what drives a wedge between him and his father. Sarek talks about being disappointed in Spock because of it. What did all of this do to poor Amanda? To have your husband and your son reject what you bring to their relationships has to hurt terribly. By the time Spock truly accepts his human half, it seems as if Sarek does as well.

Nobody, no matter their age, ever stops maturing...

  2. I've always said that nothing would ever replace TOS in my heart. I've been a Trekkie since way before TNG, and a firm believer that there's nothing like the original. So far, nothing HAS replaced it.

That said, I've switched my vote to what show is actually my favorite - DS9. Character-driven, as VBG (I think) pointed out. It's people who life rich and interesting...

  3. I've said it before, and I say it again - I cannot name a regular character on DS9 that I DON'T like. As for guest characters, the only thorn in my side was Bareil. I just didn't like him. I have nothing against the actor who plays him.

Ok, since I "have" to pick favorites, in no particular order: Avery Brooks, Terry Farrell, Nana Visitor, Andrew Robinson, Rene Auberjonois, and

Marc Alaimo, Marc Alaimo, Marc Alaimo, Marc Alaimo, Marc Alaimo, Marc Alaimo!!

Whew - that last one was no secret!

  4. Around 1400, the pronunciation of most English long vowels was changed, in what is called the Great Vowel Shift.  Also, The 'e' at the end of words like "take" was no longer pronounced.  By around 1500, Middle English had taken an early form of Modern English.  Even though there were many changes in pronunciation, the printers of the time continued to use the old Middle English spellings.  The 'k' and the 'e' in "knave" were kept, even though those letters were no longer pronounced.  This is why there are a lot of inconsistent spellings in modern English.

The funniest thing I find in all of this is the word "phonics."  Of all the words in the English language, you would at least expect this one to be spelled phonetically.

    Fonix.

Ohmigosh, this is the first time outside of the classroom I've ever heard someone discuss the Great Vowel Shift. I used to bring it up to kids in my classroom, but I think the history of the English language is fascinating.

Lazy? Nah - the island of Great Britain just got invaded too many times! Besides living in the great mixing pot named the United States - (Yes, I meant to say "mixing" and not "melting.")

So, hey - if the Spanish Armada had actually made it to England, we might be speaking a more Latin-based language than we already do!

  5. This is slightly off-topic, but it has to do with Spock's in from "The Empath."

    Click For Spoiler
Spock and Kirk are caught in a forcefield to keep from saving McCoy near the end. The forcefield feeds off their emotions. Granted, Spock is the first out, but the fact that he was caught in the first place is very telling. :) I'm sure McCoy, once he recovered, didn't let him get away with that for very long. Or Kirk, once he thought about it. Both of them teased Spock unmercifully at times.

Personally, I think it was more than friendship.

And not airing "Where No Man..." first was a deliberate decision...

  6. Ah, yes - the never-dying guy. By the end, he had exploded, fallen off a cliff, had been greatly disfigured - I loved that guy! Caught a glimpse of him as I surfed by TV Land the other day - before the scars. Must've been the first episode he was in. Never knew what he was going to do next. Unfortunately, I don't quickly remember his name, either. Did it start with "M?"

  7. TOS - all, most of them over and over and over and over

    TNG - probably 70 %

DS9 - About 85 %, most of them over and over and over - waiting to afford more season sets

    VOY - 15 % or so

ENT - about 10 episodes - waiting for reruns to be over!

I came into ENT late, and catch TNG occasionally on Spike TV, but they always seem to be playing ones I've seen before!

  8. lol...oh, that would be precious. Can you see Sisko asking Gowron for information on where the tribble home world is? And telling him why he wants to know?! This would be a great fanfic idea - couple that with finding out that the tribbles have some low level of sentience, and you not only have a humorous story, but one with relatively evil connotations.

Actually, hearing Worf sing songs of the Great Tribble Hunt, as Odo calls it, would be a great high point.

LOL...I think in terms of fanfic too much...

  9. Personally, I pay to have it done.

Seriously - I grew up in a rural setting, but we ALWAYS shovelled. I've lifted many a ton of snow. Otherwise, I lived on a corner of the family farm, and my grandfather used his tractor to do the majority of it. Now that he's 89 and not able to do it himself, my brother plays in the snow with it.

  10. If I remember right, I think she also played Billy Crystal's estranged wife in "Throw Momma From the Train."

I could swear I saw Nana Visitor play the murderer in an ep of Matlock. :dude:

Of course she also had that season-long role as the primary bad-guy on Dark Angel.

Gates McFadden played Paul Reiser's boss on Mad About You.

Nana V was also a blonde bad chick on Knight Rider once. She made the rounds of mystery tv in the eighties.

Seen Marc Alaimo on The Incredible Hulk (my personal favorite), Starsky and Hutch (multiple characters), The A-Team, Total Recall, Tango and Cash (another enjoyable one), Scarecrow and Mrs. King (one ep, and one other uncredited semi-appearance, I think), Wonder Woman, The Six Million Dollar Man (same ep as John de Lancie), etc., etc. Yes, I watch for him...

Andy Robinson was in a fun ep of Moonlighting once. I'm trying to borrow the Dirty Harry he was in, but my brother won't give it up!

Just saw Hawk - um, Avery Brooks - on a "documentary" on A&E (might have been The History Channel) on the Bible and Christmas. I didn't watch it. Worf has done several commercials. I love his speaking voice. de Lancie was also on the premier episode of the new Mission: Impossible. Good killer type.

There are way too many for one list...

  11. lol, I thought it was the same actor who played the injured C Pike.

 Jeff Hunter died. That's why they had to "burn" him.

I would think they would add this episode as part of the season sets. It's classically Trek - they have it on video, why not continue its release?

I currently have no job as well (as of the day before yesterday). I feel your pain. :dude:

  12. My coolest things either show my age, or my weirdness -

A Christmas card from my parents featuring a piper in our main clan tartan

Two DVD sets of "The Avengers" (1966 - the only year I didn't have any eps from)

A 3 CD set of award winning barbershop quartets

2 tapes (4 eps) of "Johnny Quest" (The one I remember from the 70's)

Oh, sheez - I have to stop. I sound way too weird, even for me...

  13. I don't think religion makes us inequal...just different. But, in many ways, I'm glad ST stays out of the religious arena. The vast majority of shows, when referencing or discussing any religion, but especially the more conservative ones, slam it in some way. I'd rather they didn't.

  14. I have an artificial green tree. I also hate vacuuming needles. I spent about $50 on it, it looks great, and it lasts for years-and why spend money year after year on one when it's just me here? My brother and his new wife went to my grandfather's farm and cut their own - how sweet, how romantic...wonder how long THAT tradition will last... <_<

  15. I went to the first matinee, opening day. (Yesterday) The lines were literally three times as long as they were for Two Towers, with fewer kids (a student I know who skipped school for it told me that the local teachers had almost all scheduled tests for that day, trying to keep the kids in school. Maybe he's just being pessimistic.). Thank God I still write my own schedule for two more weeks!

It was GREAT. If you get emotional at movies, take tissues. I'll have to see it a couple more times to get the true effect it has on me. (Had to do the same with the other two.) After Christmas, after Christmas...

I can't wait to see what the extended edition is like! Peter Jackson did NOT disappoint in ANY way, shape, or form! I won't spoil it with my favorite parts - I'll wait 'til a few more have seen it...
