I have added this thread so that users of Startrekfans.net have a regular place on the site to catch up and stay informed with updates on the Star Trek New Voyages productions.

For those who have not heard of Star Trek New Voyages, it is a fan project involved in the creation of episodic film productions focusing on the original crew of the starship Enterprise. Produced by Cow Creek Films the entire crew has been recast and stories are set after the third season of Star Trek, designed as a continuation of the series. Once finished the "webisodes" are available for free download at their site newvoyages.com. The work they turn out is very good indeed and highly recommended, definitely worth a look!

QUOTE(From Star Trek New Voyages)
The Mission of "New Voyages"

We believe in the type of future envisioned by Gene Roddenberry. "New Voyages" is our vision of Star Trek. A Star Trek set in the 23rd century and created in the 21st. It's a Star Trek with a familiar look, a familiar crew, but something new, and we think, something special.

There are other fan films - some want to imitate the 60's look and feel of the show - some are focused on other parts of Roddenberry's universe, and all are made with love and passion.

However, New Voyages is not the Trek of the 60's. It is the Trek of the future; a Trek that looks as modern and flows as fast as any action adventure show on TV today.

New Voyages was created in April of 2003 by James Cawley and Jack Marshall.  Our goal is to tell stories that fall within the 4th and 5th year of the five year mission.  These "short films", continue the original 5-year mission of the Enterprise and are produced currently at a rate of 2 per year.  As such we consider each short film an "event" not merely a new episode of a weekly TV show.

Enjoy the show - and enjoy the science fiction!

Slowly regaining conciousness after the two weeks of filming and getting too little sleep, I thought an update would be good...

Jack Marshall has already begun reviewing footage and even posted some screenshots!

Here are a few samples:

I'll try to add a few "behind the scenes" shots as I continue to recoup after lack of sleep...

I have to thank James Cawley for fulfilling one of my dreams...

In our local fan club (USS Tahawus - Lake Placid, NY) my fictional character was an Efrosian (sp?). James promised me that someday we'd work it in.

With his push and Kevin Haney's incredible talents, my wish was granted and I was transformed into an alien for this episode.

I can't thank them enough ...

Talk about news !!!

We can finally officially announce another BIG name involved with Star Trek New Voyages.

Seems many people have taken a liking to the artwork on the walls in the Briefing Room screen grab.
(In case you're not sure which picure I'm speaking of, it's at the bottom of this post.)

It has been officially released that those pieces of art are actually digitally inserted and they were created by none other than...

In Mike's own words

"I digitized the emblems for the aircraft carrier and the NASA space shuttle test flights for a personal project. The ring ship mission patch was something I worked up on my own time for the bar in "First Flight" (ENT). The registry number for the ring ship, XCV-330, comes from a Rick Sternbach painting that he did for the movie Enterprise rec deck, as seen in ST-TMP."

Just how many more surprises can we come up with?!!! naughty.gif

This was posted at TrekToday.com regarding the interview on G4:
QUOTE
James Cawley and Jeff Quinn, who play Kirk and Spock on Star Trek: New Voyages (of which Cawley is also a longtime executive producer) announced that they are in talks with George Takei (Sulu) to appear on the fan video series, following a recently produced episode with Walter Koenig (Chekov).

Speaking to G4's Attack of the Show, Cawley said that they were in negotiations with Takei and "It looks like he's going to step up to the plate and come back to Star Trek." When the host joked that he would need permission from Howard Stern, on whose radio show Takei is now an announcer, Cawley and Quinn said that they had heard Stern was a big Star Trek fan and they would be glad to have him too.

"NBC foolishly cancelled the show," Cawley noted, explaining that, as fans themselves, they wanted to be part of that universe. The New Voyages team decided to pick up where the original Star Trek left off.

Quinn was not a big fan until he met Cawley, he said, explaining that he needed a crash course in portraying the beloved character made famous by Leonard Nimoy and feeling concerned because this wasn't a situation like James Bond where several actors had made it their own; there was only one prototype.

As for Cawley, as "kind of the financier", he decided that even though everyone wanted to play Kirk, "the big chair was mine!"

Now, noted Quinn, it feels remarkable "to be validated by some of the people, the pros, who have been working on Star Trek since its inception back in the 60s." He named Rod Roddenberry and Koenig as just a few professionals connected with Star Trek who have been involved with New Voyages.

The episodes are currently released in *.wmv format. They are then archived in *.zip format to try and make the download files a bit smaller and therefore faster to download.

To get the episode, simply log onto http://www.startreknewvoyages.com then:

  • click on the left side of the splash screen for 800 x 600 site or click on right side of splash screen for 1024 x 768

I've seen the Starship Exeter stuff. While it is entertaining and well worth watching, it is vastly inferior to the quality of the New Voyages bunch.

Personally I prefer New Voyages because of the continuation aspect and of course the involvement of big names from the original series, but I did watch one story from Exeter and thought it was enjoyable. Worth a look at the very least.

It's been a crazy few months latley with Star Trek New Voyages. We are heavy into post production for our episode "To Serve All My Days" starring Walter Koening; prepping for two more episodes to be shot in September (including "The World Above, The Sky Below" starring George Takei) , getting our new forums/discussion boards up and running and now . . .

Well, let's just copy and paste the newsbit from StarTrekNewVoyages.com News

- - - - - - - - - - - - - -

James Cawley reports on the latest rumors and reports regarding a new STAR TREK online mini-series:

There have been inaccurate reports on the wire, so to set the record straight, here is the SCOOP!

A fan produced feature-length digital miniseries that starts shooting on July 12 called "Star Trek: Of Gods and Men" will be Produced in part by the team behind "New Voyages." This new webisode — which will be distributed on the Internet in three parts — stars Nichelle Nichols and Walter Koenig reprising their roles as "Uhura" and "Chekov," but in the post-Kirk time of Enterprise-B captain "John Harriman," reprised by Alan Ruck. Tim Russ will direct, and will also appear as a younger "Tuvok." The film will include other performances by Garrett Wang ("Harry Kim"), Chase Masterson ("Leeta"), Grace Lee Whitney ("Janice Rand"), Gary Graham ("Soval") and Crystal Allen (from "Bound"), along with some special "surprise" guests.

"Of Gods and Men" is executive produced by Sky Douglas Conway, head of PlanetXpo and producer of "Lady Magdalene's" and the "Roddenberry on Patrol" short films, and the script was written by Conway along with Jack Trevino and Ethan H. Calk, both of whom contributed to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episodes. Other behind-the-scenes professionals from the actual show will be involved, such as Doug Knapp as director of photography.

The miniseries will be shot in part on the "New Voyages" set in New York State, but is expected to include locations in Los Angeles. The movie's Web site is www.startrekofgodsandmen.com.

Cawley explains, "While we are thrilled to be helping with this endeavor, please remember that this is A SEPARATE project from "NEW VOYAGES." This project is/was started by Sky Conway. He contacted us, and asked us about the use of our sets, props and volunteers. We here at New Voyages are VOLUNTEERING behind the scenes to help Sky with his Trek dream. This is his project and we are along for what is sure to be a fun ride. NO money is being made. We are not being paid and we are not charging for the use of our sets. We are still abiding by the guidelines given to us by Paramount more than two years ago.

"The fan films are a vital part of Star Trek and it's history. No other franchise on the planet can boast of such a dedicated and vocal fanbase! It is our dream that CBS/Paramount will someday license and support these Fan films. They already license fan fiction thru their pocket books division, this would be the next logical step! At any rate We are grateful to CBS/PARAMOUNT for 40 years of this enduring legacy, called Star Trek. We here at New Voyages support and thank them."

They are forbidden by law to profit from the sale of dvds. However, I'm pretty sure that they can take donations in general.

Interesting. But only if they're a non-profit type of organization, right? Wouldn't they have to be in order to accept donations?

They CAN NOT take monetary donations as accepting money of any kind violates their agreement with CBS/Paramount--which outlines their use of the Star Trek francise in an amateur not-for-profit production. They do take gift cards from Home Depot and like places, as well as donations of items for the sets and filming. They have a wish list on their site. They don't send out dvd copies except as acknowlegement to people who donate. Distrubution of dvds violates their agreement. They also can not charge people to see their films at conventions or other venues.

The first episode, In Harm's Way is available from their mirror sites in dvd file format. TSAMD is not yet, and they have promised a special edition, with vintage commercials and a surprise, when they release the dvd formatted files. They prefer you wait for the official dvd version to be released on their site before making a dvd.

However, if you can't wait you can visit their forums there are many good discussions on how to convert the files to a format which will burn on a dvd. Then you miss out on the special edition with the surprise!
