Very good, very powerful episode. The clash between Riker and Jellico added depth to Riker, I thought, and led to Jellico being more than just a gruff old man. And who could forget the torture of Picard, just horrible... It stayed on my mind for weeks afterwards. Madred not only wanted Picard to divulge the information of Starfleet's plans, but he basically wanted to break the man and make him less of a person and more of a thing.

I give it a 4.5, could have played Riker and Jellico a bit more, and also could have shown Worf struggling more with losing the Captain.

I'll review both parts of this episode together.

A simply incredible episode as you would expect because Ronald Moore (DS9 genius) wrote the script.

The two plots in this episode were both superbly written.

The first was a change of command on NCC 1701-D where the style of Picard was replaced by the micro-management style of Captain Edward Jellico who was superbly played by the brilliant Ronny Cox of RoboCop fame.

Watching him wind up and antagonise the crew was wonderful.

I loved the verbal sparring with Commander Riker and the way he immediately changed everything on the ship, including getting rid of Picard's deadly poisonous Lionfish, similar to the one that almost killed Brooke Shields in The Blue Lagoon. :blush:

He was also able to finally get Deanna Troi out of her dress...... :blush: :(

Sadly, he only wanted her to wear her standard uniform, which I think she looked sexier in, but hey maybe that's just my own perversion speaking. I can never be sure.

Interestingly, Data became XO in this episode and wore the red command uniform.

Of course, the Jellico Reign Of Terror was only half of this episode....

The other half was the incredible performances of David Warner and Patrick Stewart. Aside from the obviously powerful and memorable torture scenes, it also provided us with a great deal of information about Cardassians and Cardassian society.

The battle of wits between Picard and Madred was superb, made even more powerful by Picard's admission at the end of the episode that he was very close to breaking before he was released.

Gold Standard.

Rating = 5
