"Broken Bow" does a great job of introduction as the crew of the Enterprise embark on their first mission to escort a wounded Klingon back to his home world of Chronos.

The character introduction is well done, introducing each character by showing what their job/specialality is. For example, Hoshi is first seen teaching a language class, she is the communications officer. This episode also gives a small glimpse into the young life of the soon-to-be captain Jonathan Archer as he and his father fly ships together in his youth.

This episode also introduces the new enemy, the Suliban. Which are very clever when it comes to technology, since they are no more advanced genetically than humans according to Dr. Phlox. They are indeed a very interesting species and a great enemy to be on the first episode, they keep it interesting, even thought they aren't actually on that much.

The most interesting thing about "Broken Bow" is that we see how primative the 22nd century Enterprise is compared to the 24th. The fastest warp they have on "Broken Bow" is 4.5, a snail's pace compared to the warp 10 we are used to seeing. They also have no tractor beams, instead, using graples to snare their hostages. Also, a person has never been in a transporter before this episode, but it will all change by the end, I don't want to give away who the first person to be transported is.

"Broken Bow" also shows us that this series does have humor by adding jokes here and there in the episode. The funniest part is when Hoshi has trouble with the universal translator and can't understand what the Klingon is saying. She at one point thinks he claims that "His wife has grown ugly" and "Stinky Boots". But later the find out that the Klingon is delerious and may not know what he is saying. Watching T'Pol tackle a bread stick with a fork and knife is another thing not to miss.

Overall, this episode is great way to introduce new characters and villains, Travis finding the "sweet spot" in the Enterprise being the most interesting parts. But there are a few dull parts in this hour and a half pilot episode. The part when they visit Rigel X could have been a little more interesting than it was. This is a good episode, but the episodes later this season proves the best was yet to come.

***1/2 out of *****

I voted Good. There was so much excitement and anticipation in the premiere of the new series ..it was easy to overlook details like canon violations. The characters were well introduced..loved the plot idea of the Vulcans having held back the Humans specifically Henry Archer's development of his Engine and thus giving Jonathan such dramatic tension with the Vulcans. Mayweather's Character was the only major disappointment, IMO Anthony Montgomery never stood a chance, his Character was poorly conceived in pre-production.

I voted Great in the fact after the events in ST:FC what happened 100 years later with the Warp Drive Technology and yes the slow speed of 4.5 (not faster till earlier shows)like TNG-DS9-Voyager but the amazing inspection Pod and the new Foe the Sulibans(and the Intro of the Klingons)on Earth and also the introduction of the (Decon chamber "enjoyed seeing Trip in his Undies"!)

:) :frusty::clap::dude:

Yes, the scratch was repaired in "Dead Stop", season 2, 4th ep.

I thought the ep was excellent. Good introduction of the characters, good involvement with the Vulcans and Klingons, a new species/villain and time travel.

So I go from TOS and TAS to Enterprise. Forward into the past, eh?

I gave it a 4. It's a solid introduction. It was really solid for the first few minutes, and then they met the Vulcans. Everything we've known about Vulcans from TOS is kinda thrown aside. The fundamentals are there, but T'Pol doesn't do a convincing job. Other than that, it was a good enough generic storyline. Good job overall, though.

This was probably one of the best premiere episodes in Trek. Better than "Encounter At Farpoint".
