3. Orson Welles (Citizen Kane and The Magnificent Ambersons)

4. Howard Hawks (Scarface, The Big Sleep, Rio Bravo)

5. John Ford (Stagecoach, 3 Godfathers, Fort Apache, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, Rio Grande, Mogambo, The Searchers and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance)

I say Steven Spielberg. Because I like alot of his movies. Jaws, Jurrasic Park, etc.

Yes, Spielberg is a great director in modern cinema. Shinder's List is a true classic and would certainly be in my top five all time films, he has also had a large amount of successful/popular films. However I am not sure about him when compared to the classic masters of the screen, I feel he just has a bit further to go.

Out of that list I am going to say Steven Speilberg. Mainly because of the Indy Jones movies and Shindler's List.

And Hitchcock is good. I love North By Northwest. And Rear Window was good.

I also love Resevoir Dogs by Quentin Tarintino, but I think he could tone down the violence in some of his movies.

So... I geuss I voted for Speilberg.

I gotta say Spielberg as well, imo no other director has made as many rocking good films as he has. Others of note to me are (in the order they appeared in the poll):

Woody Allen

Ingmar Bergman

Tim Burton

James Cameron

Frank Capra

Francis Ford Coppola

John Ford

Alfred Hitchcock

John Huston

Stanley Kubrick

George Lucas

David Lynch

Sam Peckinpah

Roman Polanski

Martin Scorsese

Orson Welles

I know Spielberg will be the most popular choice here. And I almost went with him. I would agree that out of the 'modern' directors he's the best. However, I can't get those movies that Hitchcock did out of my mind..Rear Window, Vertigo, Psycho, The Birds, Rope..

So, I voted for Hitchcock

I agree that all those films you mentioned were classics. From Hitchcock I would say that my favorite is Vertigo.

Another good film not often mentioned is Hitchcock's 1940's film 'Foreign Correspondent'. Great film.

I didn't vote Those directors cross some different periods in moviw making and it's kind of hard to compare - there's a couple I've never seen a movie from then. There's a few I don't care for their movies. Some of the others have made some real classics.

Others that didn't make the list

Michael Curtiz - Casablanca, Yankee Doodle Dandy, Mildred Pierce

Peter Weir - Witness, Dead Poet's Society, The Truman Show and currently Master and Commander the Far Side of the World which I haven't seen

James Ivory - Remains of the Day, A Room with a View

Milos Forman - Amadeus, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Ragtime

Steven Spielberg has made some good ones but he's also had some duds

Flashes in the Pan

Kenneth Branagh - Henry V, Much Ado about Nothing

Remains to be seen

Peter Jackson - LOTR - I don't how he could ever top this
