Las Vegas Star Trek Con 2014 Report Part 1 by trekz:

The Creation Star Trek Con held at the Rio Suites Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada from July 31 - August 3, 2014, was well attended and rather frenetic. There were 3 interactive displays for photo ops: a recreation of the Guardian of Forever, a transporter station, and character cutouts where fans could have their pictures taken. These were popular, but also clogged up the hallways a bit. The main ballroom was huge, as was the dealers room, which featured a record number of guests signing autographs at tables. Creation no bid auctions were mostly held in the secondary theatre, in addition to other programming. As usual, parties for Gold and Captain's Chair attendees were held, as well as a dessert party. Very popular was the Nevada Pops concert, featuring an appearance by Trek composer Ron Jones, who conducted the Next Generation Suite. The music group Five Year Mission was used to great effect as the house band in the main theatre, playing on and off for most segments. A new feature was a concluding concert by the Enterprise Blues Band on Sunday, with special guest James Darren.

Thursday:

There were appearances by Nichelle Nichols, Garrett Wang, and TNG panels with Brent Spiner, LeVar Burton and Michael Dorn, followed by Marina Sirtis, Gates McFadden and Denise Crosby.

The TNG men were hilarious, with quips such as "I hate you with the power of 10,000 suns" made by Dorn after being teased by Spiner, and Spiner's idea of having a "10 hour panel where everyone in the audience could ask a question". They also discussed playing psychologists, watching old episodes, Reading Rainbow, the cultural significance of "Roots" and the idea of a Captain Worf show, with Spiner mentioning that Dorn "already had the captain's chair in his house".

The TNG women, plus Terry Farrell, were entertaining. Crosby talked about being a fan girl when she went to Saturday Night Live when Nirvana and the Red Hot Chili Peppers performed. Getting on an elevator she encountered Nirvana, and was tongue-tied, when their drummer saw her and said, "You're F***ing Tasha Yar!" to which she replied, "You're F***ing Nirvana!" Sirtis spoke about women thinking Troi was role model, but Marina not so much. She told of being on a TSA watch list for 6 months, after telling off a TSA employee at an airport, while a little voice she didn't listen to kept saying "Shut up, Marina!" Sirtis in answer to a question admitted that she got homesick for the UK and missed the English sense of humor, Spotted Dick, black pudding, and her childhood friends.

Garrett Wang followed the women and told stories about each one. He first met Gates McFadden at a gas station where she borrowed $10 from him, to pay for her gas! He told about meeting Denise at FedCon in Germany in 1996, where they served you beer during the autograph sessions. He started calling here Denise Bitta there and continued afterward. At a Dragon Con Marina yelled at him for texting while on stage, then he explained he was tweeting about the session. He also talked about FIFA soccer, a story about the power of oumlat, the power of de Lancie, how texting teaches people to edit themselves, and about an encounter with a certain TOS star who gave him a weak wristed handshake and didn't seem interested, contrasting that with meeting Patrick Stewart who already knew who Wang was before Voyager aired! He closed telling of an embarrassing fan encounter, the "I thought that was your elbow" Jeri Ryan story, and about hanging out with Beltran.

A Thursday highlight was Karl Urban. He talked about the "All I got left is my bones!" line and working with Abrams. He spoke of the trickiness of finding a balance between emulating and copying Dee Kelley's McCoy and how he feels a great responsibility to get McCoy right by cherry picking some characteristics, plus showing a slightly younger McCoy. Urban spoke about practical jokes with Vigo Mortenson. He told of the elaborate neutron cream joke (inferring that the cream was necessary because of a radiation problem where they were filming!) which involved more and more of the cast as it expanded, and how they really got him. plus the fact that he WAS going to get them back and FILM it! He concluded talking a bit about watching Star Trek with his dad, and about Doctor Who.

One of my favorite actors, David Warner, began by noting that he was already doing Hamlet at the Royal Shakespeare company when Patrick Stewart first joined it doing very small parts. WArner spoke of doing Time After Time (directed by Nick Meyer), Tron, and The Omen. He talked about Chancellor Gorkon being a combo of Lincoln and Gorbachov. He noted the trickiness of Trek techno-babble. He spoke of doing A Christmas Carol with George C Scott, and being lucky with roles. Having the costume and makeup helped him find his characters. Did the Man with Two Brains, saying that doing theater makes making a switch to farce rather easy. He ended talking about doing Penny Dreadful and Cold War on Doctor Who.

END Of Part 1 - More to come!

Good write up. Thanks.

Question: was there a lot of cosplay? Did you see it? It seemed to be listed in the agenda quite a few times.

I saw some cos-play, but not all. There were quite a few people wearing costumes, with some having a different one every day. On Saturday Trek series groups were assembled in the back of the theatre to be photographed by fans.

I missed a session with John Paladin giving makeup tips (he did Suzie Plakson's makeup as K'Ehleyr at the Chicago Con on stage). I did see him in the dealers room doing makeup at a table there. A wonderful session I saw was the great Michael Westmore doing the Dax makeup for Terry Farrell on the main stage. We learned that he always listed the number of times he did that particular makeup and put his initials on Terry's neck each time. Farrell then got her hair done and reappeared onstage with designer Bob Blackman wearing the red leather

wedding costume from DS9's wedding with Worf. That was impressive. Westmore talked onstage about what products he used and some techniques. Westmore, known for having developed most of the new alien species seen on Trek, mentioned that he usually did one new alien species each week. He recommended that those wanting to become makeup artists take formal classes or training in prosthetics. I later saw Westmore applying makeup at that same table in the dealers room.

Bob Blackman appeared onstage on Saturday and talked about his costume experiences working on Trek shows. He mentioned buying runway fashion books each season for ideas. He currently works on the show Glee and mentioned that he misses having 50 people working for him, as was the case on Star Trek Enterprise.

Saturday's costume contest was the best I've seen, improved by having real judges and not audience applause judging. They did not include any Starfleet costumes to start. Preliminary judging was held in the secondary theater, which I didn't see. Having a costume that was constructed by or for the wearer was emphasized. A group of 30 cos-players was chosen to appear for judging on the main stage. Among the judges were Michael Westmore and Bob Blackman. Each contestant was brought on stage and asked about what they did on their costume. All were impressive. Among my faves were a two person team: one person wearing a replica of DS9 around their waist and another with an elaborate dress that unfolded out into a held up replica of the wormwhole (obscuring its wearer. The winner was a person pulling a black fabric with the fake alien head from The Corbomite Maneuver; this was then pulled with the costumer appearing as Balok with his head and a fake small body the resembled that of the costumed Clint Howard. A number of great alien costumes were also onstage, Klingons, Orions, etc.

There were also some mentions of the makeup and costumes by Trek stars: frequent comments in answer to questions about how long it took to have alien make-up applied. Michael Dorn told of how grueling his original makeup was: being both time consuming and somewhat painful. Dorn considered leaving the show over this issue. He had asked about having it changed, but was rebuffed. Finally when a producer brought it up, there was discussion and a easier method was concocted and adapted.

Although I don't do cosplay, I thought that the sessions I saw were interesting and the method of having experts judging the costume contest yielded a superior field of contestants and more deserving winners in my opinion.

Note: I recently came across an interesting website called themakeupgallery which has a section on Star Trek Universe makeup with images of the actors and their Trek characters - alien races - with brief information below - it's interesting and seems to be a work in progress.
