Deep Roy Hopes For Keenser Return

Recommended Posts

Deep Roy, the genre actor who portrayed Scotty’s sidekick Keenser in Star Trek XI, has his fingers crossed that fans will see his character again in the next Star Trek movie.

In a video taken at the 2010 Sci-Fi Expo in Richardson, Texas, Deep Roy, best-known to fans for his role as an Oompa Loompa in 2005’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, spoke about his admiration for J.J. Abrams as well as his hopes for a future role in Star Trek XII.

“J.J. Abrams is another talented director, writer, creator. I love him, I love J.J. Hopefully I will be in the sequel of the Star Trek, which is still writing at the moment. I am glad he put me on the starship, on the Enterprise. And let’s see what happens in the sequel.”

Nope. Just a lot snappier than Gurdeep Roy.

On topic, I would like to Keenser return. I don't know why people are calling him Star Trek's Jar Jar Binks. He's only in a handful of scenes and he's only got one line. Not even comparable.

Cool fact, Deep Roy is the only actor in history to appear in Star Trek, Star Wars and Doctor Who.

The character did nothing for me. I didn't love or hate him. He was there and played a minor role in the film. I think his outbursts of eccentricity could be compared to Jar Jar Binks in relation to its distraction from the plot. I personally didn't like or dislike Jar Jar either, just calling it like I see it. Both he and Jar Jar are also similar in that they both have detractors that may not understand that these characters serve a point in the overall plot of their respective films. Love them or hate them that is their purpose.

If the character returns, he could be good if the writers gave him a better spot rather than him being solely Scotty's exotic sidekick.

Btw, does anyone know what species Keenser belongs to? Just wondering.

Thanks. :)

Keenser immediately made me think of a line at the end of Plato's Stepchildren, Kirk to Scott on communicator: ...and we're bringing you a little surprise. He is of course referring to Alexander, a little person whose chosen to leave the colony.

Why would Kirk say that way, "little surprise" about a dwarf? It's always sounded odd to me and I'd bet Keenser was developed around that line. Many people familiar with Scotty of TOS might agree he wasn't 'normal', that his devotion to the Enterprise and especially it's engines could be interpreted as an attempt to compensate for something.

My personal fanon on the subject goes something like this; Scotty from TOS is so devoted to his work because of some hugh personal loss he experienced in the past. The loss of his best friend in the whole Universe, a little guy named Keenser. (Pooooor Scotty, such a tortured character. He never seems to get a break. See Wolf in the Fold & The Lights of Zetar.)

If I am in the writers train of thinking here, Keenser is going to be a vital part of Mr. Scott's character development in the future so yeah, I too hope for Keenser's return.

I didn't have a strong dislike of the character, I just thought it was supurfluous. It was basicly a comic relief character like Jar Jar Binks, only Binks was so annoying the character threatened to destroy the franchise. It didn't but it could have. Besides, Scotty was comic relief enough.
