io9's The Top 100 Science Fiction/Fantasy Shows Of All Time

Recommended Posts

500x_besttvshows.jpg

Science fiction and fantasy have ruled television for over 50 years, but some shows have brightened our screens and supercharged our brains more than others. Here's our list of the 100 greatest science fiction/fantasy shows of all time.

How did we determine these rankings? Using science. That means that if you disagree with the shows we included, or the order we ranked them in, you are anti-science, and must go back to living in caves and eating animals you killed yourself, with your bare hands.

Just kidding — actually, we know that these rankings are highly subjective, and we argued over them for hours. And we don't expect you to agree with every single choice we made.

We did try to look at a show's popularity at the time it was on the air, how much of a cult following it's garnered since it ended (if it's already ended), and how much influence it had on other TV shows and pop culture as a whole.

Feel free to argue with us, and each other, in the comments — just please, be friendly and civil about it. Thanks!

I must be anti-science.

Stargate SG-1 needs to be rated higher and the BSG remake is not so good as to be counted in the top ten. I've never even heard of some of these series. And Warehouse 13 hasn't even finished it's first season but it made the list? I mean... I'm really liking the show, but it hasn't even run for a full season.

There's quite a number I don't agree with. I.e. why is The Prisoner not on the top 20?

Here are some of my favorites from the list though:

69. Lost in Space

63. Thunderbirds

55. Sliders

54. Red Dwarf

50. Battlestar Galactica (original)

47. Mystery Science Theater 3000

34. Lexx

33. The Avengers

31. Quantum Leap

28. Venture Bros.

24. The Prisoner

23. Cowboy Bebop

22. Space: 1999

21. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

20. Farscape

15. The Tick (animated)

14. Futurama

13. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

12. The Twilight Zone

11. Blake's 7

10. Lost

9. Battlestar Galactica (remake)

8. Babylon 5

7. The X-Files

5. Max Headroom

4. Star Trek: The Next Generation

3. Firefly

2. Doctor Who

1. Star Trek

There's ALOT I want to watch though like I never got a chance to see either Space Island One, Quatermass or Star Cops.

My first thought was "there have been 100 scifi series?"

Then I see they scraped the barrel to include horror, supernatural, fantasy, & anything gimmicky just to get 100 - I mean "Get Smart" is on the list? And Brisco County - not really scifi but any Bruce Campbell fans that haven't seen it should watch - only lasted a season but very entertaining.

Although some people consider Jericho a Scifi series - IMO it was more of a straightforward drama but if it's on this list should be at least in the top 10 - I'd put it at #2. And Eureka should be much higher on the list as should The Outer Limits - that was a classic.

And what happened to the Invisible Man - that was pretty good, and The Chronicle and Tremors were were farcical but entertaining.

or what about The Prentender, Starman, Dark Skies, Sanctuary, The Man From Atlantis, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea or the Time Tunnel

Or how could they leave off The Invaders - another classic

I'm really surprised by the lack of Irwin Allen shows on the list. He did Lost in Space but he also created Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Land of the Giants, and The Time Tunnel.

I'm also surprised that Max Headroom made it on the top 5, but then it was a great show so I'm not that surprised.

While I'm not off topic, anyone fans of Blake's 7?
