Thanks again, Alterego! You know, those uniforms-or what may be 'jackets' ? on the crew lookk rather classy. I am always glad to get more pics from the movie. And from what I have so far seen of the bridge..wow.I love TOS as we all saw it...but, and I have remarked thus before, this vision looks more modern than the original. Granted, design visions are affected by the period in which we live-witness how cars have changed, from, say, the '50's...I would say the most stylish period in that arena...It looks as if it should come AFTER the 5-year and before missions..particularly the exterior of 1701....but I think I have modified some of my preconceptions about what it all should be. I am trying to do so, and accept this, including the overall story, as 'another trekverse' seperate from Classic as we know it....with the latter still existing elsewhere. LLAP, fellow trekkie.

You're welcome, happy someone is getting use of it.

Certainly no denying it looks different from how we think it should but remember, the producers have said this [somehow] honors canon.

That it is an alternate timeline seems most likely and I can accept that, if true.

It'll be nice when it comes out, so we can clear up some of this speculation. It is to an extent a balancing act, emotionally, when you've been steeped in the original vision-story wise, in particluar. The look is not so big a thing, more or less. And as I say, it does look good. I have all the screencaps, promo stuff. Saw the trailer again last night. They shortened it! The music from the movie I have heard on the net is great!

Excerpts From JJ Abrams Interview in New SFX Star Trek Issue - Talks Fans, TOS, Roddenberry & more

This week the May issue (#182) of the venerable UK sci-fi magazine SFX comes out and it is all about Star Trek. The magazine features a number of articles and exclusive interviews related to the new movie, including a cover story with comments from director JJ Abrams. SFX provided TrekMovie with some excerpts from the new magazine, read them below. More...

Andrew Steven Harris reviews the Star Trek script. Spoiler FREE!

With the world premiere of Star Trek unspooling tomorrow night in Sydney—and no, the International Date Line does not constitute time travel—I thought I’d finally break my silence about the script, as one of the few people in the galaxy to actually read the screenplay ahead of time.

A word of caution as we begin: breaking my silence doesn’t mean breaking my non-disclosure agreement with IDW, Orci/Kurtzman or Bad Robot, who would all be happy to set their phasers to kill if I genuinely ruined any surprises. So, expect a spoiler-free review below; and if you actually like spoilers, you’ll already be surfing a tsunami of them tomorrow and won’t need any from me. (In fact, thanks to Twitter, you’ll probably even get them during the screening itself).

First, however, some background: Director J.J. Abams, the mastermind behind the franchise’s reboot, is notoriously secretive with the details of his projects, a lesson cannily learned from the successes of Lost and Cloverfield; so even reading the script ahead of time required a perfect storm of opportunity and circumstance.

trekmovielogoAs the Trek editor for IDW, which routinely publishes comic book prequels for its licensed titles, the “Supreme Court” of J.J.’s creative circle had tapped me to write the four-issue miniseries that would lead into the film, with the comics hitting the stands in 2008. Soon thereafter, though, Paramount execs repositioned Star Trek as a 2009 summer tentpole release, having laid their eyes on the film’s early footage. Meanwhile, I left the Trek captain’s chair to freelance full-time, and the logistical insanity of creating both the film and the prequel simultaneously finally forced J.J.’s team to shift gears and create the comics series in-house. (No cards or flowers for me, please—it’s not the first time that’s happened in Hollywood, and it won’t be the last.)

During the interim between the two, however, I had the chance to drive up to Universal and read the script at the Orci/Kurtzman offices (where, by coincidence, I actually met one of the guys who’d ultimately write the prequel). This by itself took an extraordinary amount of negotiation, including a maze of round-robin phone calls, several rescheduled appointment dates, and finally a comprehensive resume of published works demonstrating my geek cred. When these people said they intended to keep the story under wraps, they weren’t kidding—in fact, even some key people at CBS/Paramount hadn’t read the script yet, and quite possibly still haven’t. (Did it help that I went to the same high school as Trek producer and Lost Abramite Damon Lindelof? Probably not, but you never know.)

I recognize that such secrecy has occasionally frustrated fans—Trek at its most basic might be a mere copyright, but it’s also a global cultural touchstone and the centerpiece of imagination for legions of true believers. When the custodian of that mythology says he’s going to rewrite the testament, but keep its secrets from the congregates, there’s naturally going to be disquiet among the faithful.

At the same time, however, this secrecy has delivered its exact desired effect: Fans have become more abuzz about this film than perhaps any other in Trek history, and unveiling the reworked franchise with one single flourish has proven much more effective than had J.J. piecemealed it out. Or, to put it in my familiar comic book terms: it would have been like reading a scattershot series of panels, released haphazardly, then attempting to gague whether the issue was any good.

So, enough preamble. Having read the script in a single flourish, is it any good?

The answer is: Oh, my, yes. You’re goddamn right it is.

Well Star Trek has premiered in Australia and by quite a surprise, in Austin Texas!

Star Trek Premiered, Seen and Reviewed! By Ryan Parsons

Though completely unexpected, Star Trek has made its world premiere in er, Austin, Texas? That's right. Pulling a fast one, Paramount and the powers that be surprised moviegoers who were expecting to watch Wrath of Khan at the Alamo Drafthouse. TEN MINUTES OF "TREK"

April 7, 2009 by Tom Sharp

A couple of weeks ago, Ain’t It Cool News was advertising a free screening of STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN at the Alamo Drafthouse – South Lamar. Priority seating would be for Fantastic Fest badge holders, with empty seats given out on a first come, first serve basis. In addition to the classic sequel, there would also be a screening of ten minutes of footage from the new STAR TREK directed by J.J. Abrams.

I thought about attending the event, but didn’t really want to stand in line, hoping for a seat to a movie I already own on DVD just for ten minutes of footage to a movie I will probably be able to get a screening pass for, anyway.

And then I got an email from Jason Hunt, asking me to me the Austin correspondent for his new science fiction fan site, SciFi4Me.com. I agreed, if he could get me a seat, I’d go to the screening at the Drafthouse and report back on the ten minutes of new footage. A couple of days later, he forwarded me the confirmation that I would have a seat reserved for the event.

Leonard Nimoy beamed into the South Lamar Alamo.

Last night was a pretty epic one for everyone here in the world of Fantastic Fest. Tim and Harry had invited Fantastic Fest badgeholders and the general public to come out to a special screening of STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN that was set to feature ten minutes of exclusive never-before-seen footage of the new J.J. Abrams Star Trek. What none of us expected - not me, not Karrie League, and not even Harry Knowles himself - was that Paramount itself had enlisted Tim in a secret mission to surprise Harry, his AICN crew, and the entire audience. And boy did that surprise work.

Not only did we watch WAY more than ten minutes of footage - Leonard Nimoy himself stopped by with the entire film and we got a chance to see it three hours before the Australian “world premiere.” To say the air in the room was energized with excitement would be a huge understatement. But here’s how it went down:

Young Star Trek crew boldly walks red carpet by James Regan

SYDNEY (Reuters) - The 11th Star Trek movie in 30 years had its world premiere on Tuesday, its markedly younger cast boldly going along the red carpet to a makeshift cinema in the Sydney Opera House.

Chris Pine, 28, who plays a cadet-aged James T. Kirk, admitted he'd never met William Shatner, who starred as the original Captain Kirk in the television series dating back to 1966 as well as the first Star Trek movies.

But he said he watched the TV show "quite a bit."

First review: New Star Trek is an intelligent triumph

Ian Cuthbertson | April 08, 2009

Article from: The Australian

ASKED by Paramount to revive the film franchise of Star Trek, which had been dormant, some might say moribund, since the feature Nemesis tanked artistically and critically in 2002, hotshot director JJ Abrams put his best minds to work.

Some of his conspirators were Trekkies, some had never seen a single episode. The point was that they all had to be satisfied with the film, from their various perspectives.

The result is a triumph, certain to be regarded as not just one Trek's better moments, but one of the finest films made in the sci-fi genre.

Special effects in films grow daily more complex and believable. Abrams will make you believe in a crisp future full of green women, bug-eyed aliens serving on the bridge of the Enterprise, and space conflicts that make most previous Trek films look like Saturday morning cartoons.

'Star Trek': What people are saying after the surprise screening

Apr 7, 2009, 03:57 PM | by Chris Nashawaty

Last night, some very lucky Star Trek fans who believed they were walking into a screening of 1982's Wrath of Khan instead got a surprise sneak peek at J.J. Abrams' new enterprise. While Abrams' reboot/prequel, Star Trek, isn't scheduled to officially hit theaters until May 8, those fortunate enough to be on hand at the Alamo Draft House in Austin, Tex., were the giddy victims of a blockbuster bait and switch. And nudging the event into total nerdvana territory, the hotly anticipated summer tentpole was reportedly introduced by the film's writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, its producer Damon Lindelhof (Lost), and (get this) Spock himself, Leonard Nimoy.

TZN Exclusive: Koenig Talks Trek

Walter Koenig on New Star Trek, InAlienable & Burma by Henning Koonert

Walter Koenig exclusively talks to TrekZone Network about the new Star Trek movie, his successor as Chekov, his latest Sci Fi flick InAlienable and lasting impressions from a trip to the Burmese border.

After a long day of signing autographs and posing for pictures, Walter Koenig graciously agreed to take the time for an interview with TrekZone Network. We are deeply grateful to him!

In the last couple of years, Star Trek fans saw Walter Koenig once again as Chekov in independent Trek productions like New Voyages and Of Gods and Men. He remains active beyond the franchise that made him famous forty years ago, too. Koenig completed his independent film InAlienable in 2008. Mulling over the question if even aliens have inalienable rights, the movie deals with the highly topical tension between individual rights and security concerns.

Koenig not only plays a character in the movie starring Richard Hatch (Battlestar Galactica), but also wrote the script and produced the film, which was released last year as a pay-per-download video on the Internet.

Koenig tells TrekZone Network about upcoming plans for the movie: "Until recently it was available on the Internet, but it's not anymore. But it will be getting out on DVD soon." Indeed an announcement has now gone up on Koenig's official website stating that Renegade Film Club is offering InAlienable for 19.99 $ on DVD for a limited time. People ordering the movie will receive a copy of the independently produced Star Trek movie Of Gods and Men for free. Koenig, whose sci-fi novel Buck Alice and the Actor-Robot was published in 2006, plans to sell InAlienable as a novel, too: "It is written. I am trying to sell it. I am trying to get a publisher to buy it."

Troops get peek at ‘Star Trek’ By Karen Jowers - Staff writer

Posted : Friday Apr 10, 2009

Beam ’em into the theater, Scotty.

About 440 soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines will get to see the newest Star Trek movie at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, on Saturday — about a month before its stateside premiere, Army and Air Force Exchange Service officials announced Friday.

The troops will get an extra treat at AAFES’ Reel Time Theater: The actors playing the new recruits on the Starship Enterprise will also attend — Captain Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto), Uhura (Zoe Saldana), Nero (Eric Bana), Dr. McCoy (Karl Urban) and Lt. Sulu (John Cho). Director J.J. Abrams also will be on hand.

The directors, actors, Paramount Pictures, the local command and AAFES worked together to make the screening special for troops, Roy Robertson, AAFES’ vice president of restaurants and hospitality, said in the announcement.

The movie, simply titled “Star Trek,” recounts the early days of the original characters, with Kirk and Spock starting out as bitter rivals rather than the close friends they would one day become. Kirk, a “delinquent, thrill-seeking Iowa farm boy,” locks horns with Spock, who was raised in a logic-based society devoid of all emotion. On their maiden voyage, the young crew “must find a way to stop an evil being whose mission of vengeance threatens all of mankind,” the news release states.

“Star Trek” is scheduled to open in the U.S. on May 8.

New Star Trek Viral Campaign

by TrekMovie.com Staff

Back in January of 2008 Paramount put up a viral site (ncc-1701.com), but since then it has been quiet on the viral marketing front from for Star Trek, but that appears to have changed, and in fact we seem to have missed it as it has been out there for a couple of weeks. It all starts with those Star Trek dance parties we reported on a couple of weeks ago.

Party photos hold clues to viral sites

TrekMovie reader Phil B just sent in a tip that he noticed some URLs appearing in photos from the Star Trek Dance Parties at thecobrasnake.com. Here is one from the first party in Los Angeles.

Crack the code

There is more to this puzzle that we have sussed out, but for now why don’t you guys take a crack at it. One place to look may be the party photos at thecobrasnake.com (assume just the Star Trek parties). We haven’t figured it all out, but there are more sites for sure. So start posting below and lets see if we can’t get to the bottom of this thing.

Another Star Trek TV series?

By: Larraine Stacey

With the new J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek movie to hit theaters in May, the timing is perfect for another Star Trek series. That's what screenwriter Bryan Fuller, of Pushing Daisies, thinks. Hollywood.com quotes Fuller:

Faran Tahir breaks barriers as a new starship captain in Star Trek

By Patrick Lee

Faran Tahir, a Pakistani-American actor, has the distinction of playing Captain Robau, the first Federation starship captain of Middle Eastern (well, South Asian) ethnicity to play a major role, in J.J. Abrams' upcoming Star Trek, and he told SCI FI Wire the honor isn't lost on him.

In this, Tahir is the latest in a long line of ethnic actors who have taken on color-blind roles in Trek, which has had a tradition going back to the original series and creator Gene Roddenberry of imagining a future where every person lives up to his or her fullest potential, regardless of race or ethnicity.

Abrams set to stun

By Natalie Long

If you're a fan of Star Trek, you'll be rewarded time and again, but if you've never seen it, well, that's the audience we made the movie for, says Abrams.

Star Trek director J. J. Abrams, who was in Dubai this weekend, is mulling over a story to film in the city.

Where better to meet the man who created the most compelling island in the history of television than on Dubai's most iconic man-made island?

We're at the Burj Al Arab, and J. J. Abrams, creator of Lost and director of the new sexed-up Star Trek movie has only been in Dubai for a few hours. But his feverishly creative mind is already at work, thinking of a story to film in the city.

"I have to admit that I have already said this morning, we have to shoot something here," Abrams says. "It's obviously like nothing I've ever seen before. It's just a remarkable place. Because any good story is translatable to any location, it makes me think of the things we're working on now, and wonder what can we do that is set in Dubai."

Interview: Karl Urban on Star Trek and beyond

New Zealand actor Karl Urban talked to SHANDELLE BATTERSBY about playing the Enterprise's moody medic on the eve of the film's world premiere in Sydney this week

So how did you get the role?

I heard they were rebooting Star Trek and was very interested in being a part of it, having watched it since I was a boy. I don't know if I was a Trekkie or a Trekker, but I loved the original show. We set up a meeting with J.J. [Abrams] and I thought it went horribly wrong. I went into the meeting and he said "so we're doing this Star Trek film and it's going to be really exciting, have you got any questions?" I said "Yeah, yeah, what's the story about?" and he said "Can't tell ya" and I said "Well I guess I've got no questions". There was silence and I thought "Oh God, I've blown that, and walked away thinking it wasn't going to happen.

Two months later we got word that J.J. wanted to see me for the role of Bones McCoy which I was absolutely thrilled to bits about and so went in there and started my audition and he started laughing. I hadn't done live theatre for quite a few years and to get that immediate response back that the joke you are telling is funny almost threw me. I finished the take and he was sitting there looking at me going "wow, that's it, that's Bones".

He turned around and looked at producer Brian Burk who was already on his BlackBerry going "I think we've got the guy" and so was April Webster the casting director.

Is that one of the most immediate responses you've ever had to an audition?

Just so everyone knows, nothing is imminent on the series front for Star Trek. Fuller did that interview a while ago (March 2nd, 2009) and it seems like somebody picks it up every few weeks or so. And, it is just speculative on Fuller's part. Most likely Trek will stay off of TV until some point after 2013 (presuming that ST09 is successful enough to garner the sequels the cast are signed for and that there are two year breaks between each movie). That would be Paramount's ideal I would think, they don't want to risk diluting Star Trek again. However, this is somewhat complicated based on the fact that the rights to the franchise were split and CBS owns the TV rights. I really don't know how it would work.

That being said, Fuller would be near the top of my list for potential show runner on a future Star Trek series (behind Abrams, and Damon Lindelof). What I've seen of his work is fantastic.

DARK HORIZONS Review of Star Trek

By Garth Franklin

Successfully relaunching the long-declining franchise, rising director JJ Abrams delivers a less cerebral, more adrenalin-fueled take on the voyages of the USS Enterprise. In the process he reintroduces critical elements the franchise has not seen in years - cultural relevance, suspense, and a fresh sense of wonder missing from a mythology so heavily explored and exploited over the years.
