Endgame Shame

Recommended Posts

I've just finished watching the final episode of VOY and... WOW what a slap in the face.

It was basically two hours of nonsense with a rushed resolution in the last two minutes and that's it... roll credits.

There were so many issues that developed during the series the writers could have touched upon like:

- the status of the Maquis crew members

- the reaction of Seven arriving home

- Kim and his parents

- Paris and his father

- Janeway possibly being court marshalled

- so many other unfinished issues

...and no... I won't accept "well use your imagination. The writers left it open ended for us to figure out ourselves." Nope. Its just plain slack writing.

So some more notes:

1. The Borg.

Throughout VOY the writers slowly transformed the Borg from hive mind scary to Cruella D'Ville clownish. The final "blow" being dealt in this episode. So many things don't make sense. By the way, can't the borg travel through time whenever they want to, and collect whatever goodies they like as depicted in other episodes? Ooops. I could soooo go on about this but I won't!

2. Time travel.

Why to this time? Why not back before VOY got into its mess in the first place? Why not use the technology that brought her back in time to go back home? Did anyone notice that plot hole?

3. Seven and Chakotay hooking up.

What the?!! Remember earlier on when Seven made a list of potential partners? Where was Chakotay then?

4. Seven's humanisation.

I couldn't help feeling that Seven's development was a little rushed in the episodes leading up the the finale. Plus, she seems to totally forget her knowledge about the borg when plot necessitates...

5. Emotion.

Apart from a slight hint of watery eye from Harry, we didn't get much of a chance to explore the emotion behind the crew's return. That would have been great to see. I mean.... 7 years. That is a lot of emotional build up right there.

All in all... it just felt like the writers of VOY knew school was about to be out and made a final dash before running out VOY Senior Highschool doors for good.

Don't get me wrong... I LOVE Voyager... I LOVE Janeway... I've loved most of the episodes and characters. I've become a big fan of Kate.

Endgame however was totally disrespectful, in my opinion, to the spirit of Voyager.

RIP VOY

Let me start by saying that I am a HUGE Voyager fan. It's my favorite ST series.

I loved Endgame! It's one of my favorite episodes. Time travel and the Borg have been a major part of the series since the early seasons and it seems fitting that the season finale includes both.

Also, if you want to know what happened after they got back there are two books (yes I know they're not canon) the first one is called Homecoming I can't remember the author or the second ones title but I'm sure someone else here can.

I have to agree that "Endgame" was the absolute worst series ender in all the Trek series.

Even worse than "These are the Voyages"?

I stand corrected. I forgot all about that debacle. "Endgame" is the 2nd worst series ender followed by "All Good Things", another piece of garbage. DS9 had the best series ender of them all.

I agree, there was a lot more that could have been touched up in the finale episode, as well as "All Good Things..." and that was my favorite series, at least they followed up with some movies. I think a VOY movie would be kinda sweet, may a 1st mission since their return, I dunno...

Oh don't go there, man. "All Good Things..." is imo the best episode of Trek ever. Pure brilliance.

Endgame definitely needed to spend some time on what happened when they got back to Earth. Reunions, pardons, etc... they really missed the opportunity to make a really good emotional closing. Just left it hanging.

"Endgame" was horrible. I agree with everything that Lt.Nelson wrote.

"All Good Things" on the other hand was a good end episode. That episode left a good feeling after watching it while "Endgame" only made me annoyed.

End game was the best voyager episode! if you wanna know what happens then go read the voyager books!

The books aren't canon and don't count. The last Voyager book I read had Seven dying at the end. I'm sure she will be back in the next book. There should have been a more satisfying ending on television for Voyager.

I thought Endgame was at least on par with the last four seasons of VOY.

The way it left threads hanging indicated to me the producers knew no more VOY would ever be filmed so they were confident Authors would tie up loose ends in novels. I really don't expect any future VOY production to occur so I think it's fair to say people should feel confident the novels will never be contradicted by new canon.

DS9's WYLB was worse than Endgame IMO. It felt like I was watching the series Wrap Party rather than the finale. Everyone standing around sipping champagne and patting each other on the back for a job well done. Yawn.

Endgame was better than the hashed DS9 finale. I agree there were a number of issues never brought up but most of these had been effectively dropped long before Endgame anyway. What was left was a fairly entertaining showdown with the Borg. Didn't like Seven and Chakotay getting together though. That came out of the blue.

I don't think the Chakotay-Seven thing was totally out of the blue, she was interested in him as far back as Human Error (which was seven episodes before the finale, not a long time but not really a short time) and then the events of Natural Law sort of showed the beginnings of a potential relationship (4 episodes before the finale).

As for showing events after Voyager returned home, I think it would have been anti-climactic. The story of the series really ends when they get home because that's been the driving force of the series. The story's over.

I disagree. I mean, it doesn't really end until the crew actually beams down to Earth. It was more than just getting back to the Alpha Quadrant... it was about getting back to Earth. Probably even for Mr. Vulcan, Tuvok. I mean, he'd find it logical to get to Starfleet Headquarters at some point, right? As far as keeping it from being anti-climactic, a good montage with well-orchestrated music and words when necessary (announcing pardons for the Maquis crew, for example) could have easily rectified that.

Asside from the loose ends, I enjoy the episode. It has great action and special effects.

The books are not canon and therefore don't count, and frankly IMO aren't very good

I find the Voyager books better than most episodes.

And who cares about "canon"? That's irrelevant. The torch has been passed over to the authors of the books and the Voyager story continues in the books.

I disagree with that. I think it was pretty sudden. Yes Seven showed interest in Chakotay in Human Error. But for six episodes after that she barely speaks to him. They're stuck on the planet in Natural Law together, but then again they barely speak.

I think it would have been less of a shock if after Human Error they at least had a dinner together in the mess hall or something.

I can't say I would 'condemn' ''Endgame'', so to speak. There are moments I long recall, and love from it..such as when Janeway is putting the decision of this mission, that would be possibly prolonging their journey home, and Harry makes his statement , to the effect that he would, if they did so, be nowhere else...or with anyone else. It sums up the 'family' that is the Voyager crew. Or, when Future-Kim say his last goodbye to Admiral Janeway in her shuttle...but as a longtime STV'er, it would have been nice to see the end results of acheiving their goal-though, as someone stated above, getting back was THE cenrtal point of the series;fini. I do remember, as I watched NCC-74656 glide into Earth orbit with her escorts, and the last credits flashed up, ''Ah, this is so brief...'' I think that would be a common feeling, for many of us who followed Kathryn and co. for seven years-and will continue to do so, in various ways.

that's the thing, we spent 7 years watching these people, going through crises with them, following their lives...we became atatched to them. So we wanted some closure, to see how their journey realy ended,
