Geordi's promotions

Recommended Posts

I would assume that it largely had to do with their records. They were both good officers, but lets face it Worf's Klingon heritage and traditions caused him to do some things that would not reflect positively on a Starfleet officers Record.

not to mention the number of times worf had to resign his commission so they wouldn't be reflected against his personal record.

Doesn't Geordi even show up as Captain at towards the end of Voyager? Voyager incidently having their own never gets promoted character in Harry Kim.

Yeah, he shows up as a Captain but it is in the future in an alternative time line, when Chakotay and Harry are trying to go back in time to stop the destruction of Voyager.

Racism? The fact that Geordi was a bright engineer and a chief was needed urgently and he filled that niche? Maybe fact that Worf smelled and no one wanted to work with him...

Why do you think Geordi make Lieutenant Commander in only 3 years but it took Worf 7 years to make the same rank?

It took La Forge longer than 3 years to be promoted. He had been in Starfleet longer than Worf when TNG started.

According to st.com, La Forge graduated from the Academy in 2357 and was promoted to lieutenant commander in 2366 so he was in Starfleet for 9 years when promoted. Worf graduated from the Academy in 2361 and was promoted to lieutenant commander 10 years later in 2371 despite having disciplinary action noted in his file (when he killed Duras) and having resigned during the Klingon civil war.

La Forge and Riker actually graduated from the Academy the same year which shows how fast-tracked Riker's career was considering he was a commander while La Forge was still a lieutenant (jr grade) in season 1. It took Riker 5 years to make it to the rank of lieutenant commander and another 2 to be promoted to commander.

Thanks for the facts! This answers the question for me!

Maybe Worf never really wanted to be promoted, he seemed fine as Lieutenant in chief of security/tactical.

If he didn't want to be promoted he could have turned it down and it wouldn't have affected his being Chief of Secuirty. I really have no idea why he wouldn't want to be promoted though. He certainly showed in the 2-parter Gambit and in the episode Conundrum that rank did matter to him.
