THE FINISHED PRODUCT!!!!!

Star Trek

“Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilization, to boldly go where no man has gone before.” Stat Trek is an American science-fiction entertainment series and media franchise. It was created by Gene Roddenberry and is the setting of six television series, ten movies, dozens of video games, hundreds of novels and fan stories, and a themed attraction is Las Vegas (“Star Trek”, Wikipedia.org). Star trek debuted in the United States on NBC on September 8, 1966. The original 1966-1969 television series features William Shatner as Captain Kirk, Leonard Nemoy as Mr. Spock, DeForest Kelley as Dr. McCoy, James Doohan and Mr. Scott, Nichelle Nichols as Lt. Uhura, George Takei as Hikaru Sulu, and Walter Koenig as Pavel Chekov (“Star Trek”, Wikipedia.org). An entire subculture has developed around the show, and for many, Star Trek has become a way of life.

Gene Roddenberry had originally pitched the show as Wagon Train to the Stars. He came up with the idea in 1964 after looking for material to rival Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon (“Gene Roddenberry”, Wikipedia.org). Star Trek premiered on September 8, 1966 and ran for three seasons, it was cancelled in June of 1969 due to low ratings, but the show gained wide popularity in syndication. Today, you can see Star Trek on the Sci-fi channel and many other channels as well. In 1975, Roddenberry developed a sequel to Star Trek called Star Trek: Phase II and in the 1980s, he developed Star Trek: The Next Generation. After Roddenberry’s death in 1991, his estate allowed for two long-running T.V. programs, Earth: Final Conflict and Andromeda. Roddenberry was one of the first people “buried” in space and is referred to, today, as the “Great Bird of the Galaxy”.

In the Star trek universe, humans united with other species of the galaxy to form the United Federation of Planets, also known as the Federation or the UFP. Star Trek stories usually depict adventures of human and alien beings who serve in the Federation’s Starfleet. As an example, Spock is a half-Vulcan from the planet Vulcan in the Andromeda Galaxy and is the science officer aboard the USS Enterprise. The conflicts and political dimensions of Star Trek form allegories for contemporary cultural realities; Star trek: the Original Series addresses the issues of the 1960s, the other series have done the same using their own respective times as well. Issues depicted in Star trek include war and peace, authoritarianism, imperialism, class warfare, economics, racism, human rights, sexism, feminism, and the role of technology (“Cultural Influence of Star Trek”, Wikipedia.org). Star Trek is set on a fictional starship, Roddenberry wanted to tell more sophisticated stories, while using situations that pertain to the future, as analogies to current problems and solving them with optimism and humanism. Harking of human diversity and contemporaneous political circumstances, Roddenberry included a multi-ethnic crew. Star Trek showed mankind what it might develop in to, if only it would learn form the lessons of the past, most specifically by ending violence (“Cultural Influence of Star Trek”, Wikipedia.org). Gene Roddenberry has stated: “By creating a new world with new rules, I could make statements about sex, religion, Vietnam, politics, and intercontinental missile. Indeed, we made them Star Trek: we were sending messages and fortunately, they all got by the network.” In the Star Trek episode “Armageddon” Mr. Spock had said, “Those who hate and fight must stop themselves, otherwise it is not stopped.” Roddenberry wanted the show to have a political agenda, as you could see in such episodes as “Armageddon” and “Assignment: Earth.”

As was stated previously, the show tells of the crew of the starship Enterprise and the crew’s mission to explore space. The show takes place “Somewhere in the future. It could be 1995 or 2995,” Roddenberry had said. The show is said to take place in the 23rd century. In the show, the term “Stardate” is used. The Stardate system was invented in order to avoid pinning down the show in an exact timeframe (“Timeline of Star Trek”, Wikipedia.org). The show takes place between 2264 and 2269. Also stated previously, the show harks of human diversity and has a multi-ethnic crew. Mr. Scott was born in Scotland in 2222, Dr. McCoy was born in Georgia in 2227, Mr. Spock was born on the planet Vulcan in 2230, Captain Kirk was born in Iowa in 2233, Mr. Sulu was born in San Francisco in 2237, Lt. Uhura was born in Africa in 2239, and Mr. Chekov was born in Ukraine in 2245 and is the youngest crew member on the Enterprise (“Timeline of Star Trek”, Wikipedia.org).

Along with the Stardate system, Star Trek has been credited with the creation of many real and fictional technologies. Star Trek is believed to have motivated the designs of the tablet PC, PDA, mobile phones, and the MRI (“Cultural Influence of Star Trek”, Wikipedia.org). More real life “Trek Tech” includes NASA naming its prototype space shuttle Enterprise in 1976 after the fictional starship. Fictional “Trek Tech” includes the teleporter, the holodeck, and the communicators. Star Trek brought the attention to the idea of teleportation and its “matter-energy transport.” Usually the teleporter is fool-proof, but in some cases it can go haywire and have dire consequences like in the episode “The Enemy Within”. Communicators in Star Trek are devices used for voice communication. They allow direct contact between individuals and ships. The communicator is similar to the cellular phone but the difference is that it does not rely on a satellite to relay the signal (“Communicator”, Wikipedia.org). A holodeck is a simulated reality facility located on starships and starbases in the Star Trek universe. The holodeck is depicted as an enclosed room in which objects and people are simulated by a combination of replicated matter, tractor beams, and shaped force fields on to which holographic images are projected (“Holodech”, Wikipedia.org). Sounds and smells are simulated by the speakers and fragrance atomizers. The holodeck is a small room but it feels large because the environment is simulated by a virtual treadmill, so the users cannot reach the walls of the room. Users maintain perspective through sound damping fields and graviton lenses to make the objects seem more distant like in reality. There are two user modes to operate the holodeck. First person “subjective mode” means the user can interact with the program as if they were part of it; third person “objective mode” means the user cannot interact with the program but be “apart” from it. In objective mode, the program characters will ignore the user as if they weren’t there. As shown in Star Trek: Insurrection, matter within the holodeck can be disrupted using the photonic pulse of a phaser and leave real matter unharmed. The final and most important “Trek Tech” includes warp drive. In the Trek universe, humanity developed the faster-than-light speed after a nuclear war and a post apocalyptic period in the mid-21st century. Warp drive is often used as a military tactic to escape the Klingons or Romulans during harsh encounters as seen in Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan.

Over the past 40 years, Star Trek has grown in popularity due to the series and movies in syndication on popular TV channels. But is this the end of Trek? Although the final season of Star Trek: Enterprise has ended in 2005, the franchise is not dead. In April 2006, the official announcement of an eleventh film had been made. The movie is a prequel to the original series titled Star Trek. The new movie was supposed to be released in Christmas of 2008 but Paramount Pictures pushed the release date bake to May 8,2009 (“Cultural Influence of Star Trek”, Wikipedia.org). Since its cancellation in June 1969, the series became popular in reruns. A cult following developed, complete with fan conventions, books, websites, movies, video games, etc. and Star Trek remains a way of life for many.

Thanks, I worked really hard on it. I turned it in a week early and didn't get it back yet. But my teacher gave me a 100 on the rough draft, so he thought it was cool, I guess.
