Hi i just registered because i have this paper i have to write about subcultures that we know nothing about, so that we can submerse ourselves and learn why the culture we have chosen is so popular/well known. So if anyone could please tell me why you love star trek. What's so great about star trek that made you a fan?

Also i've heard that you fan are calles trekkies, or trekkers. If you could possible tell me why this is the given name. I'm doing my own research but i would like to hear from the fans yourselves. so if you don't mind leaving me a post that would be greatly appreciated! thank you!

Well, hi. I've been a fan of Star Trek for years and I like it because of the Kennedy-era optimism portrayed in the episodes and in the movies. I like the plot set-up and it's just a fun space opera to get into. I like how, after fourty some odd years after the original series came into view, that our whole culture is coming to terms with what was portrayed in the multiple series. What I mean by this is that with our advancments in space and aeronautics (we are no longer in the Space Race with Russia) we have boldly gone where no man has gone before and have even dared to go beyond our breaking points. We have video games, virtual reality devices, video phones, and we even have weather modification devices as was all portrayed in the series and in the movies.

Welcome to Star Trek Fans.net! :nono:

To me, Star Trek is not just a TV show, it is like a way of life. Back when it was really popular, we would watch it, dress like our favourite characters and quote them. We attend conferences to meet our favourite stars and to socialise with fellow fans with the same interest. At the conferences we have things like fancy dress competitions. Fans also buy character figures, model starships and collectors items.

I got interested in Star Trek ever since I used to go to my Aunties and my cousin Rebbecca used to have what is called "The Next Generation" on in the background, and I decided to research it and came across this site, and learnt from there.

I've liked them since I was 12 ish.

Ask any questions, and I'll answer!

Welcome.

Ah, yes the life and existance of a Trekkie. Let's see, I caught on when I was 3 or 4. I used to watch the Next Generation on TV at around Midnight but fell asleep half way through. I went to a convention in '94 or '95 where I met James Doohan (RIP). I then put Trek on the backburner but had a resurection of it in the past few years or so. Now it is my third life ( my second is Volkswagen .) Right now it is to point of reading the Encyclopedia daily, watching it on TV and thats it.
