Various races in Trek have very distinctive starships so the designers generally start from one common design.

Federation ships tend to feature, a saucer or sphere shaped main hull, an engineering hull, warp pylons and nacelles, they are also white/grey.

Klingon and Romulan vessels generally look like predatory birds, and are mostly green.

Cardassian ships tend to look like manta rays or crustaceans, and are yellow/gold coloured.

Ferengi vessels are crab shaped and are orange/tan coloured.

Borg vessels are geometric shapes like metallic spheres, cubes etc...

The designers work from these common designs for each race.

Agreed; that's a great ship site. I already had it on my favorites list on my old computer. Thanks for bringing it to my attention again. :(

It's recently been updated to include ships like the Andromeda, the Nostromo (from "Alien"), Space Station-5 (from 2001: A Space Odyssey) and even Unicron (from Transformers: The Movie).

Eratosthenes- Too big? [scratches head] What ships do you think are too big...?
