Sorry, I should have explained the promotion. Petty Officer First Class is an E-6.

Great news! Congratulations!

Now, as an Army guy you'll have to help me out here. E-What? I was a Specialist E-4, and in my time in the Army I knew a lot of "petty" Officer's but I'm not sure what rank a Petty Officer is... :sly:

Petty Officer is an NCO, but most NCOs are "petty" as well.  :sly:

Of course you know the difference between an O-1 and an E-2:

And in most of the cases in my experience the E-2 had more military knowledge lol

Congrats, Odie. you do, of course, still outrank me. I'm an 3rd Class, which for you Army folk, is the same as a Corporal

Is it the same as a Corporal or the same as any E-4?

same as any E-4, VBG. my ID says Paygrade E-4, so I'd say same as any E-4. What's the equivelent Air Force Rank? isn't it Sergeant or Staff Sergeant? I know the Marines have Corporals and Coasties have PO3s

I'm not sure about the Air Force and Coast Guard, in the Army there's Specialist E-4 and there's Corporal E-4. Basically the only difference is responsibility. Like with a First Sergeant E-8 and a Master Sergeant E-8.

good thing you showed that chart because I was getting a bit confused with all this "E" talk.

That chart looks to be about 15 years old, the Army did away with the Spec 5, Spec 6 and Spec 7 ranks but it does show me the equivilant ranks for the Navy. Also, the E-10 rank here was actually E-9. There's 3 E-9 ranks in the Army. Sergeant Major, Command Sergeant Major and Sergeant Major of the Army(there's only one Sergeant Major of the Army for the entire Army). Of course it's completely possible that they added E-10 since I got out, I see they changed the Rank Insignia after I got out.

I got to meet the Sergeant Major of the Army in 1989 at Fort Hood.

Congratulations Odie!!! That's fabulous!! Keep up the great job.

I'm not quite completely lost in this discussion of ranks. I watch JAG and NCIS! LOL

odie congrats on the promotion and pay raise...

theres something ive always wondered... if you were an enlisted E-9 master chief, would a second lieutenant straight out of univeristy ROTC outrank you? and if that were the case, in times of battle, would the 25 year career soldier have to take orders from a 21 year old second lieutenant green at the gills? there must be some kind of compensation for this but i could never figure it out i remember an episode of ds9 when chief obrien (dunno what kind of chief) said that some ensign outranked him cause he was a NCO..he was always a smart guy, i dunno why he just didnt take the time and get his degree and commision from star fleet

btw ive never been in the military, but ive always been facinated with it..
