Seen Any Good Movies Lately?

Recommended Posts

I don't go to theatres, I hate them. All the movies I watch are at home. I watched a great one a few days ago called "Ripley's Game". It was Nasty! But I liked it. Alot of blood and killing, not at all a "Chick Flick". Anyone else seen this movie? Or " The Incredible Mr. Ripley"?

Yeah, on your recomendation we rented DEAD MAN with Johnny Depp. Pretty good EXCEPT we thought the soundtrack became tiresome after a while.

I recently bought Galaxy Quest. It was pretty good. Wasn't all that funny but was still a great story. Nice parody of Star Trek.

I rented three DVDs recently - the rest of the family is gone for a few days - and so I picked up "Mystic River", "The Last Samurai", and tonight "Hellboy". Of the three, I liked "The Last Samurai" the best. "Hellboy" was a bit funny at times. "Mystic River" seemed a bit odd several times. Ok, though.

I just watched "The Great Gatsby" with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow. I enjoyed it tremendously, but then, I loved the book.

"Gangs of New York," "The Big Lebowski," and "Big Fish" are also movies we've watched within the last two weeks. All excellent and all I highly recommend. Daniel Day-Lewis got ripped off at the Oscars when they gave it to Adrien Brody for "The Pianist." I liked Brody's performance, but Day-Lewis blew him away. Oh, well, I rarely agree with the Academy (although last year's Rings sweep was sweet to watch). :assimilated:

A movie called Moonlight Mile with Susan Saradon, Dustin Hoffmann, Holly Hunter and Jake Gyllenhaal. Really good and puts you through a real range of emotions. Good story and softly spoken.

Another really good movie is A Simple Plan and also Arlington Road.

Going back a bit but you can't beat Fargo.

Unfortunately, I missed much of a Charlie Chaplin marathon yesterday on TCM...

Two recommendations are:

  • post-812-1093410287.jpg
  • "Modern Times". 1936.
    post-812-1093416801.jpg
Adenoid Hynkel, dictator of Tomania (played by Charlie Chaplin).
  • "The Great Dictator". 1940.

Both were good, the first one a silent movie in the time of talkies, and the second was Charlie Chaplin's first talkie, which is a good one at that.

EDIT: Wait... Only video?

ST is good, ST2 was worse than Gigli

I saw Passion of the Christ, but that sucked too.

I'm going to see Apocalypse when it comes out, and I also want to see Paperatzi (correct spelling?)

And I want to rent Soul Plane, Punisher, and Trekkies 2. And I will rent those tomorrow probably...

:inlove: Yeah, it's not bad. I love vampire movies, and I paid less than 5.00 for it. I couldn't resist!

Whatever you say :picard-sith:

I liked Blade and Interview with the Vampire. Underworld is probably one of the best.

The "Blade" movies & "Interview..." are awesome! The Breed is just light entertainment. Been a while since I've seen Underworld - I'll have to see it again.

*considers starting a "vampire movie" thread*

I really must watch more vampire movies...

The most recent movies I have seen are:

  • "The Day That The Earth Stood Still" [1951].
  • "Gojira" [1954]. (A.K.A. "Godzilla").
  • "The War of the Worlds" [1953].
  • "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" [1982].

Besides being in a mood for vampire movies, I want to rewatch "Logan's Run" [1976]...

And "Forbidden Planet" [1957]. :picard-sith:

Interesting, the people I waited out Frances with rented Cold Mountain - we managed to watch it before the lights went out. Just for perspective - none of us liked it.

I had my mom staying with me and we were watching "The Gods Must be Crazy" - there's a subplot that is no longer humorous in view of current world events but the scene with that car still makes me laugh.

Jeanway, what kind of movies do you like? That would help.

For some old eeire movies:

The Cat People

Gaslight (I love Ingrid Bergman)

Other Classics:

Harvey

Destry Rides Again

Mister Roberts

Casablanca

Other:

The War of the Buttons

Dancer, Texas pop 84 (don't confuse with Happy, Texas)

The Winslow Boy

The Education of Little Tree

The House of Mirth (kleenex movie - Gillian Anderson's performance is terrific)

More recent releases:

Master and Commander

Second Hand Lions

I generally don't care for romances but I did like:

A Room With a View

The Way We Were

Buffalo Jump

Also, if Blockbuster has them - the A&E Horatio Hornblower movies were all very entertaining. (not to mention Ioan Griffudd is quite the hero)
