Why Does X Mean Experimental?

Recommended Posts

the X standing for Experimental goes back at least to early aviation days. X signified Experimental, since E was used for Electronic Warfare. The tradition is carried into ships, and ship classes in development, such as the new batch of Destroyers, Cruisers, and Aircraft Carriers, are given an X designator (DDX, CGX, CVNX).

I have a few friends who work in the 'X' division at Lawrence Livermore National Lab. I could tell you what they do, but..... I'd be guessing.
