Carpal Tunnel

Recommended Posts

You may not see me posting as much as I usually do, as some of you know I have Carpal Tunnel and the doctors have "suggested" I refrain from typing anymore then 2 to 3 hours a day. Which won't be easy because my job has me typing 8 hours a day, but I am going to cut down on my typing when possible. I'll still be here though, just not typing as much.

That is a condition caused by the curving of the wrist to type correctly, right?

Here is what I do, I hunt and peck keeping my wrists in line with my forearms, it is a little slower but my wrists almost never get sore.

The job I do requires that I type quite a bit and there's somewhat of a limit on the time I have for typing on each case (Credit card fraud). So taking longer to type really isn't something I can do, as for talking to the computer with a talk and type, I am usually talking to the person that has had fraud on their credit card at the same time I am typing so that wouldn't really work either. I may just have to take a couple weeks off of work to let it rest.

Carpal Tunnel is basically nerve damage caused by doing the same action over and over. Like typing. My job has me typing 8 hours a day, then I come home and I'm on here typing too. At least here I can use 1 hand but at work I really have to use both. I just have to rest my left hand from typing otherwise I may need surgery to correct the nerve damage.

For the next 2 weeks I am only allowed to type 3 hours a day at work. So that means 3 hour work days :D:wow:

LOL

:D Carpal tunnel, the curse of the information age.....

I've got it, too, coupled with a progressive case of arthritis, and I type all day, too. I keep it at bay with warm moist compresses, Tylenol arthritis, and I use wrist splints at night when it's really active. Also, you might want to try Capzasin or Triple Strength BenGay -- nasty stuff to be sure but I've had loads of success with both.

Have I mentioned I'm an RN? :D

Hey Boss,

You'd best go "under the knife" and relieve the pressure on those nerves. Just think, paid time off work!

I'm getting a little of that now, for the next 2 weeks (Till the 26th) I can only work 3 hours a day. On the 25th I'll see what the doctors say needs to be done.

How true. I type for a living too. Between carpal tunnel and eye strain from staring at a computer all day... I still love computers though.

Definately true, my classes I took/will take has me typing every single lab report, and my job has me typing a whole lot more recently. I have a slight disability of left wrist/elbow and with typing (or playing my clarinet or doing gymnastics) it definately gets pretty bad at times. Like some, I wear a brace whenever the pain gets to me, and in the case of when I was little. . .I was left handed until the injury, I was forced to become right-handed.

VaBeachGuy, I hope you wrist heals soon, and I hope that it doesn't require surgery.

Well I went to the Doctor today and had a nerve test. That was a lot of fun. I was hooked up to electrodes and had electric shocks sent through my nerves in my left hand and arm. Big fun, I suggest everyone try it :D

Anyway, it seems there is some nerve damage. I find out on Tuesday what's to be done about it.

Good luck VBG. I hope it's ok. I would have posted on this thread earlier to say so, but I never came across it.

My husband had that done. He said the same thing you did! :D He's a painter/carpenter and he's had elbow surgery because of the pinched 'funny bone' nerve. No fun there! He also has carpal in both wrists. He takes a lot of motrin and or asprin (?sp) for pain. He's learned to switch hands. He never complains though.

Best of luck next week at the Dr's!

Katy

I don't want to be disagreebale here BUT Carpel Tunnel is not nerve dammage! It is an over use of the upper wrist muscles and an under use of the lower. Sometimes, but rarley it is related to a shoulder problem, which only a good Chiropractor could determine. I worked for a Chiropractic office for several years and saw the doctor turn MANY carpel tunnel syndrome cases around within a few short months with NO surgery. The best thing you can do is get yourself a strong rubber band and put it around your fingers and start "flexing" them with the rubber bands "several" times a day! As your under wrist muscles become stronger you will find the carpel tunnel will disappear. I have never seen this fail yet in a patient who was committed to it. However, I have to say that most people want to trust their family med and so they have surgery which makes the situation worse. Once you have the surgery there is little, if anything, that can be done for you. Trust me on this VBG! You will never regret it and will live your whole life with fully functional wrists!

I accidentally sliced my wrist open a couple months ago. Had 10 stitches to close it up, and it was my right wrist and I'm right handed. I've had alot of pain ever since. It's no fun hurting your wrist. OH, and I've had one of those EMG's your talking about VBG:o I'd never do it again.

I had 4 of them total (The EMG). They aren't fun, that's for sure.

KT the hand specialist that I was seeing found nerve damage, which if I remember correctly he explained was caused by the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

I haven't seen him for almost a year now so I don't really remember all of the medical details but if I remember correctly he explained that the tendon in the wrist that the nerves go through (The Carpal Tunnel) gets swollen through improper over use and then press down on the nerve causing the Syndrome. If it isn't treated or if the improper over use isn't corrected then damage to the nerve can take place.

My EMG's showed damage, at least according to the hand specialist and nerve specialist I was seeing.

Anyway, then the problem was the question "how did this happen?" I know full well that it happened through work. That was the only place it could have happened but the Workers Comp Insurance company said "it could have happened brushing your hair or teeth" and the way the system is set up it's set up to favor the work place and not the employee. so they refused to take responsibility for the injury and the State backed them up. Which leaves me pretty much out in the cold.

That's pretty rotten - what's going to happen - will your medical insurance cover the surgery?

No, they said that this could be a "pre-existing" injury and none of the doctors can say "yes, this is brand new and caused completely by work" or things to that effect.

I can't really say what they (workers comp and the insurance company) did to me in polite society but I will say that I should have asked them if they needed a phillips head or a flat head before I went in to get checked out lol.

But honestly, I don't know that surgery would have been the right thing to do either. I've heard from some people that it only makes things worse or keeps you the same. Plus the past year of limited typing has really helped a lot. I still have limited strength in my left hand, I can't open a bottle of soda with it without having pain. But I can hold a glass of soda in my left hand now, at one point I couldn't even do that. In fact most of the posts I made last year were typed, for the most part with only my right hand.

Anyway, things are improving and I'm just waiting for the bank to plug me back into an open position once one opens up.

I think the Insurance Companies have Teams of people who sit around all day trying to come up with every possible reason NOT to pay on a claim. I think they are called " Contingency Experts". The "What-If" guys. To cover their butts in a claim. It's like no matter what caused your injury, they have the correct answer. You might as well not even answer the question. They have a barrage of answers FOR you, and all in their favour. You can't win.

I'm sorry to hear what they did to you but I am glad your condition is improving. I think I read that carpal tunnel is the leading occupational injury.

Maybe someday they'll perfect voice activated software - of course that should make the workplace interesting -everyone talking to their pc.
