Who are the most memorable TV characters?

A few years ago TV guide published what they considered the 50 most memorable tv characters of all time. I thought their #1 was so stupid that I quit reading the magazine (that and the cost). They picked Louie DePalma. I barely knew who that was.

 

To me a memorable character is one that has distinctive and recognizable traits. So I was thinking what characters I considered memorable and distinctive. I could think of a few -in no particular order

 

Columbo

Archie Bunker

MacGuyver

Mr. Spock

"Hawkeye" Pierce

Thomas Magnum

Niles Crane

Suzanne Sugarbaker

Lucy Ricardo

Ralph Kramden

Samantha Stevens

Rob Petry

The Cigarette Smoking Man

I would add the following to your list:

Coach ("Cheers")

Pretty good picks, TUH. In addition the the previously mentioned coadh, I would

add Cliff and Norm from Cheers (you really can't say one without the other).

 

I may sound like a dolt here, but I guess I have to add Joe Cartwright from

Bonanza. (Sorry, I'm a big Michael Landon fan.)

I think it has to do with how recognizable they are. If the show's been over for a while, and people still know exactly who the character is when they see them, then you've got a great character. I agree with the lists already given; just adding a few more.
